Decentralization: Institutions and Politics in Rural IndiaFrom Oxford University Press

This volume successfully attempts to understand the process of rural transformation taking place in the country today by initiating a dialogue with the worlds of policy and civil society. It highlights the need to move beyond the normative notions of decentralization-replete in literature on fiscal federalism and liberal democracy. It provides an understanding of the dynamic world of democratic decentralization in policy and process, and how national, state, and local politics, and critical institutional requirements like political, fiscal, and administrative autonomy affect it. In doing so, it brings to the fore the role that microeconomics can play for local outcomes and shape macro consequences. It also recognizes that any attempt to formulate decentralization arguments, designs, and strategies needs to be validated and justified in practice.

Finally, the volume while recognizing that constitutional amendments have provided vertical linkages for empowering the poor, aims to forge horizontal linkages of local governments to professionals like academics. It stresses on the need of the academic community to find mechanisms to institutionalize the learning process for the next generation.

The Beehive Metaphor : From Gaudi to Le Corbusier, by Juan Ramirez

Since time immemorial, bees have been associated with all manner of virtues. The beehive has served as the model for an ideal society, while honey and wax have provided the basis for countless positive metaphors of sweetness and productivity. The natural architecture created by bees in their hives can be said to approach perfection. In The Beehive Metaphor, Juan Antonio Ramrez shows how this lucid modular structure had a considerable influence on the architects and artists who founded the Modern movement. Models from both traditional and "modern" or "rational" apiculture were studied and reinterpreted by such key figures as Gaud, Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Beuys.

Inspired by his own father's obsession with bee-keeping – which wiped out the family's fortune – Ramrez examines the complex ideological, political and artistic repercussions of apian metaphors, thereby enhancing our understanding of the relationship between ecology, animal husbandry and architecture.

Review
"His fascinating account describes how the social life of bees has been co-opted by social movements on both the left and the right, and celebrated either for their rigid hierarchies, with everyone knowing their place under the ruling monarch, or as symbols of community spirit and harmonious, cooperative work. . . . Read this book, and you’ll never look at a tall building in quite the same way again." (New Scientist)

"An ingenious and entertaining cross-country chase after a swarm of flying metaphors. . . . The pursuit of architectural metaphor is seldom as well-grounded in knowledge of both sides as it is here, and the writing style is approachable." (Building Design)

"A charming book. . . . A timely contribution to contemporary thought concerning art and architecture. The beehive metaphor may well be due for a revival." (The Architects' Journal)

Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores, by Diane Langberg

Do Trauma and Abuse Have the Last Word?

When someone suffers through trauma, can healing happen? And, if yes, how does it happen? Dr. Diane Langberg tackles these complex and difficult questions with the insights she has gained through more than forty years of counseling those whose lives have been destroyed by trauma and abuse. Her answer carefully explained in Suffering and the Heart of God is Yes, what trauma destroys, Christ can and does restore.

But it s not a fast process, instead much patience is required from family, friends, and counselors as they wisely and respectfully help victims unpack their traumatic suffering through talking, tears, and time. And it s not a process that can be separated from the work of God in both a counselor and counselee. Dr. Langberg calls all of those who wish to help sufferers to model Jesus s sacrificial love and care in how they listen, love, and guide. The heart of God is revealed to sufferers as they grow to understand the cross of Christ and how their God came to this earth and experienced such severe suffering that he too is well-acquainted with grief. The cross of Christ is the lens that transforms and redeems traumatic suffering and its aftermath, not only for the sufferer, but it also transforms those who walk with the suffering. This book will be a great help to anyone who loves, listens to, and seeks to help someone impacted by trauma and abuse. There is no quick fix, but there is the hope for healing through the love of God in Christ.

Review
“In a poetic, powerful, passionate, and challenging book, Diane Langberg, with her many years of counseling experience, takes us on a disturbing (and healing) journey into the hearts of the survivors of many different types of terrible trauma all over the world—into our own bent and broken hearts, and then into the heart of an amazing, loving God who was humiliated, crucified, and abandoned so that we (and the whole creation) might be healed and delivered from the power of evil. This is a superb master-class in counseling and pastoral care with a gifted, experienced, and wise therapist.”
Richard Winter, MD, Therapist and Professor of Practical Theology and Counseling, Covenant Theological Seminary

“Through this book, Dr. Langberg names one of the most insidious threats to spiritual health in our generation: trauma and the wounded heart. While disturbing, her unrelenting campaign identifies the next
‘mission field’ of the church, those who are suffering silently. This book is for all who hunger to help a loved one, congregant, or client apply the truth of God’s Word as a healing ointment to the hidden anguish that trauma leaves in its wake.”
Roy Peterson, President, American Bible Society

“This book reflects the glory and love of God throughout forty years of counseling experience. Diane is a masterful teacher and counselor for victims of abuse and violence. Reflecting Christ, she inspires new and experienced counselors and encourages them to bring the love of God to suffering hearts. This book is a masterpiece.”
Luciene Schalm, President of REVER (Restoring Lives, Equipping Restorers) Ministry, Brazil; missionary of Comunidade Crist Silo

“We live in a broken world and evil is real. Where the true light of the gospel of Christ goes, the darkness of evil in this world retreats. William Wilberforce reflected the character of Christ into the eighteenth century British Empire and faithfully led the fight against slavery for forty years until it was outlawed. Diane Langberg has for forty years looked into the eyes of those wounded by evil and been a powerful voice for healing, justice, and truth. This book is a place of insight, wisdom, encouragement, and challenge for the body of Christ to love our precious Lord and to reflect his heart and love to the brokenhearted.”
Greg Pritchard, PhD, Director of European Leadership Forum, President of Forum of Christian Leaders

“Diane Langberg has seen the effects of trauma all over the globe from Rwandan survivors of genocide, to inner city kids plagued with PTSD, to suburban moms trapped in violent marriages, to middle schoolers who cut themselves just to feel something, to big steeple pastors in American churches. Suffering is real and it really hurts body and soul. In Suffering and the Heart of God, Diane Langberg never diminishes the pain of suffering, but neither does she despair. By looking to the suffering of the cross of Christ, Diane Langberg leads us to hope and healing.”
Frank A. James, PhD, DPhil, President, Biblical Theological Seminary

“This book is a powerful invitation into the fellowship of the suffering, a reparative work of the vulnerable, afflicted, and abused. Dr. Langberg is gentle and caring to the victims, confrontational to the abusers, and challenging to the church, which often fails to be a refuge. As a therapist and trainer, this is the best manual I’ve seen on what a therapist’s heart should look like. A good portion of the book is dedicated to teaching how not to be consumed by the evil in this world, pointing to Christ who can offer restoration to all.”
Stefana-Ioana Racorean, Family psychotherapist and trainer, Dianoia Institute of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice; The Association of Christian Psychologists in Romania

“As someone who has prosecuted, investigated, and confronted child sexual abuse for over twenty years, I have encountered dark suffering up close. As a Christian, I have spent many hours agonizing how to reconcile such suffering with a God who calls himself “love.” Suffering and the Heart of God is an amazing book that does a masterful job in helping to see suffering through the heart of a loving God who knows and understands suffering and the pain it creates. This book brings hope to the sufferer who wonders where God is in the midst of it all. It’s a must-read!”
Boz Tchividjian, JD, Executive Director, GRACE (Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment)

“I challenge you to name a more influential Christian psychologist today than Dr. Langberg. This is not hyperbole! While an impressive communicator, brilliant thinker, and an astute therapist, the real reason for her influence is her willingness to be a student first—of broken people, of herself, and of God. Too often influential leaders spend much time touting themselves. This book will show you something different, in that you will see more of God and his heart for suffering people than you will of Dr. Langberg—just as she would want it.”
Philip G. Monroe, PsyD, Professor of Counseling & Psychology, Biblical Seminary Graduate School of Counseling and Global Trauma Recovery Institute

“God never wastes a wound. He is in the midst of our darkest moment revealing himself—full of love, truth, hope, and healing. This book is an absolute treasure—a gift of grace to us all.”
Tim Clinton, President, American Association of Christian Counseling

“Diane Langberg brings to these moving essays decades of experience working with trauma survivors in the United States and abroad. This is no arms-length reflection on the nature of human suffering. Throughout, she repeatedly points her readers to Jesus Christ, the Suffering Servant, who is the only hope for victim and perpetrator alike—and for the counselor who desires to be used by God to make a difference amidst terrible brokenness and sin.”
Michael R. Emlet, MDiv, MD, Faculty and Counselor, the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF); author of CrossTalk: Where Life and Scripture Meet

“Do not read this book unless you are genuinely open to being led by the Holy Spirit to become more involved in ministering ‘to the least of these’ in Christ’s name. Dr. Langberg has written a powerful and thorough summary of the complex reality of trauma in our world today. She has described Christ’s Gethsemane weeping and his Calvary caring for those who are wounded and needy, and she calls us to weep and to watch and to care with him. She challenges us—Will we weep and watch and care, or will we sleep?”
Dr. Samuel Logan, Associate International Director, The World Reformed Fellowship

“As a Rwandan who lived through genocide, experienced my own trauma, and witnessed trauma for my people and my clients, I know firsthand the truth of what Diane teaches in this book. Until you understand the psychology of evil, sin, and suffering, many things will remain hidden and unanswered, but Christ can transform lives affected by emotional trauma into instruments to restore life and turn victim into victor. Thank you, Diane, for addressing this difficult and often hidden topic.”
Baraka Paulette Uwingeneye, President, Rwandan Association of Christian Counselors; Director of Aftercare, International Justice Mission, Rwanda

“Diane drops insightful one-liners like others drop names. I remember the first time I heard her describe trauma as the ‘mission field of the twenty-first century.’ Suddenly, everything we were grappling with in the field made sense. A thousand lightbulbs went off. Synapses clicked. That one sentence opened up a new direction in my personal life and vocation. Read at your own risk because there’s no going back to the way life was before.”
John Walter, President, African Leadership; cofounder of The Trauma Healing Institute

“When I get the chance to listen to or read Diane Langberg’s work, I take it. Of the five greatest talks I’ve heard in my sixty-eight years, she gave two of them. Her writing inspires. She is as tough-minded as people come, never underestimating the horrors of life. But walking with her through those horrors inspires me with hope. Because Diane walks with Jesus, and where Jesus is, there is hope. Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores will turn your heart more fully to God in the midst of the evils and mundane cares of the world that you face. Please read it.”

“Stepping into the trenches with those whose lives have been blown apart by the heinous business of human trafficking means you’re battling alongside them on many fronts: past, present, and future. The terrain is dark and hostile, and the Enemy seems to have won. But, as Langberg artfully reminds us, we are but chaplains in this war. The battle is the Lord’s and the victory is certain. Be of good courage and press on!”

Helpful Understanding of the Destructive Effects of Trauma and How the Gospel Heals
By Craig P. Hurst
“I think a look at suffering humanity would lead to the realization that trauma is perhaps the greatest mission field of the twenty-first century.”

“As the people of God we have been called in any ways to serve as the rescue workers of this world. We are invited into the fellowship of the sufferings of Christ. That means we are called into the place of darkness and death because that is where he went.”

In .41 second Google will bring up over 201 million search results for the word suffering. At every moment of the day there are thousands and thousands of people suffering all around the world. While one person is experiencing a high moment in their life there are thousands of others experiencing deep and painful suffering at the same time.

We cannot avoid suffering in our own lives. Pretending, as some religions teach, that is does not exist is no help. In a world full of sin it is only a matter of time before a person experiences suffering. When we do experience it we need ways to deal with it from people who are capable of helping us.

Bringing understanding about and the healing only Christ can offer to victims of suffering and trauma Diane Langberg has written Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores (New Growth Press, 2015). Langberg has counseled trauma victims the world over for over forty years and works with a team of experienced counselors across numerous fields to help hurting people.

There are three reasons why Langberg’s book is a must read for all professional and church counselors. First, Langberg’s forty years of trauma counseling gives her a unique perspective and vast amounts of knowledge, wisdom and skill in working with trauma victims. Her experience with a variety of trauma situations has given her a picture of the evil that suffering brings into peoples lives. From dealing with domestic abuse in the US to helping the victims of the Rwanda genocide, she has an authority like very few others in her field.

As a result of her vast experiences, Langberg is able to present the reader with a picture of the suffering in trauma from a multitude of angels. Langberg covers everything from the psychology of suffering, the spiritual effects of suffering, living day to day with suffering, grief, the church and abuse, domestic violence, and even the role shame plays in trauma. This books is a chance to sit at the foot of a uniquely qualified counselor.

The second reason this book is so good is because of Langberg’s ability to apply the gospel to victims of trauma. Central to the hope she offers in her counseling is the reality and power of the resurrection of Christ. The suffering that trauma can take people into the pits of despair. It can take them to the grave. Jesus went to the grave Himself because of and for our sin and the sin of others. He rose out of the grave to new life and that resurrection life is available to us; to those who are suffering and experiencing trauma. When all seems lost as a result of our suffering we can be found in Christ because of His suffering.

The final reason this book is a must read is because Langberg of the challenge it is to those who are counseling victims of trauma. The primary reason, she argues, that we avoid dealing with suffering is because of our own egocentrism. Not only do we want to avoid experiencing suffering in our own lives but we want to avoid it in the lives of others. We don’t want to touch the suffering of others or be touched by it. We want to distance ourselves from the sin that causes the suffering in the lives of others but in doing so we forget that it effects us as well. Langberg writes

"We are not healthy doctors working with sickness. We are sick doctors who are trying to grasp the nature and impact of a life-threatening disease that has invaded our own souls, minds, and hearts. Whatever this disease has done to our so-called patients, it has done or can do to us." (30)

Christ was not egocentric when it came to the suffering of humanity. The Son of God emptied Himself of the position He had at the right hand of the Father and took on human sinful flesh in order to redeem us from its weaknesses that our sin brought on in order to bring us back to the Father with Him. This is how we are to follow Christ when it comes to helping others with their suffering. We walk and live among the dead because that is what Jesus did for us. We offer the hope of the resurrection to the dead because that is Jesus did for us. We realize that as ministers of this resurrection hope we are as much in need of it as those to whom we offer it to in the name of Christ.

Suffering and the Heart of God is an amazing book that will give readers much to chew on with regard to suffering, its victims, and the hope of the gospel. Part of the power of her approach is that she is not writing from a merely academic perspective. This is not a clinical textbook with pat and stock observations and answers. This is a book borne out of lived experience with suffering in her own life and the life of others.

This is a book that proclaims the superior healing power of the gospel over the power suffering can have in our lives.

Gritty, Theological, Convicting!
By Matt
I am deeply grateful to New Growth Press for furnishing a copy for this review. This offering by Diane Langberg is a profound assessment of God’s redemptive working in the hearts and lives of sufferers, and in particular, of trauma victims. In it, Dr. Langberg distills her impressive resume and experience into a thoughtful and helpful book that belongs on every counselor’s bookshelf. Langberg integrates a beautiful Christian orthodoxy, a vast knowledge of the counseling world, and an adept capacity for storytelling into a helpful whole. This book reads at times like a prophet, at times like well-written case studies, and at times like Christology. Reading this book seriously will force you onto your knees in prayer and into the lives of the broken. I took several months to read this book, in part, because I saw my own need to absorb it well.

Let me put it plainly: If you minister in any capacity, you cannot afford to not read this book.

By L. Forman
Written for professional counselors. I am not one but have friends who have gone through trauma. This book is written in a way that a lay person can easily follow. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be effective in helping those who have suffered trauma due to death, war, disease, abuse, weather events, genocide, etc.

A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century: Shaikh Ahmad al-Alawi (Golden Palm Series), by Martin Lings

'Almost a prerequisite for any serious study of Sufism in European languages': this was the verdict of Seyyed Hossein Nasr in his review of the first edition of the book. According to the Journal of Near Eastern Studies, it is 'one of the most thorough and intimately engaging books on Sufism to be produced by a Western scholar'. Certainly there is nothing second-hand about it. The author lets Sufis speak for themselves and, in a series of unusual and absorbing texts mainly translated from Arabic, he gives a vivid picture of life in a North African Sufi order. Against this background stands the unforgettable figure of the Algerian Shaikh who was head of the order from 1909 until his death in 1934. The last few chapters are mainly devoted to his writings, which include some penetrating aphorisms, and which end with a small anthology of his remarkable mystic poems.

Made purchase of 'Sufi Saint' by way of Thomas Merton's exceptional praise of the text which he read in the early 60''s.
The first chapter, "Seen From The Inside" is an account of a doctor who cared for the Shaikh when ill and remained
a disciple of sorts/ confidante for many years. The inspired beauty of the M.D.' account flows like a first-hand life
composed by a disiple of a Christian Saint. The writing in this opening chapter is exceptional for its power to convey
the holiness and truth of Al-Alawi. Going further along with succeeding chapters may either interest or put off the reader.
If the reader is interested in the minutia of Sufism, here's your treat. If not--like myself--just skip those chapters. Does the
general public know that the Sufi sect of Islam is under attack by mainstream Islam. Isis kill off Sufi like the Church
once burnt heretics at the stake.

A book about a Sage by a Sage.
By Ishroq
A very clear and intimate introduction to a saintly personality, Martin Lings' A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century is an important work on Islamic mysticism. It recounts in clear fashion the life of a twentieth century Sufi Saint, Shaykh Ahmad al-`Alawi. In this book, Martin Lings made a figure, relatively unknown to scholarship outside the Islamic world, better known. More importantly however, as the author himself remarks, the purpose of the book "goes far beyond academic orientalism"(p. 9) so as to allow a general audience access to its subject matter and therefore can be read without any sort of background in Islam. As the author puts it, only one quality is presupposed in the reader, namely, "a sincere interest in the `things of the Spirit'" (p. 9).

The book intends to provide insight to the reader about the `character' and life of the Shaykh al-`Alawi, through both people who knew him as well as through the corpus of writings that he left behind him. The structure of the book is divided into three parts, each part not only telling of aspects of the Shaykh's life, but also shedding light on the deeper reality of those aspects that he lived and breathed. Thus the author begins the first part with a section entitled a `seen from the outside', which speaks of how the Shaykh was seen by people outside his `circle', particularly by his French physician Dr Marcel Carret. Lings then moves to a sectioned entitled `seen from within', wherein the Shaykh is viewed from within his circle, which includes his disciples as well as himself. What is interesting here is the movement made by the author from the outer to the inner, which is itself symbolic of the journey of the inner way that the Shaykh, as is made clear, very much lived. Part two expounds in brief fashion what the Lings calls "the Doctrine", of both the inner way in general and the Shaykh in particular through quotations and excerpts from his writings. Mention is made of the doctrine of `wahdat al-wujud' (Oneness of Being), which holds a most central place in the mystical tradition of Islam but also of all other orthodox mystical traditions. Alongside the doctrine of the `Oneness of Being', other aspects of the Shaykh's doctrine are mentioned such as, `The Three Worlds' the `hierarchies of Being', the `Great Peace' (the attainment of which is the goal of the inner way), in which important themes such as prophethood vs. sainthood are discussed. Regarding the latter, Lings says it was a problem which was solved once and for all by Ibn `Arabi when he wrote "The Messenger is more universal in virtue of his sainthood then he is in virtue of his apostle-prophethood" (p. 261). The third part then deals with some selections from the Shaykh's aphorisms and poetry, with important commentaries on the former by Lings himself, which provide valuable insight into his familiarity with the subject he is dealing.

The text, in addition to introducing the remarkable personality of the Shaykh al-`Alawi to the average person, sets out to correct certain misunderstandings of orientalist scholarship. Beginning with the second chapter entitled `The Origins of Sufism' certain problems arise that the author attempts to solve. Many works on Sufism, except for a number of noteworthy exceptions, that begin `from the outside'- precisely because they are from the `outside'- have failed to see the Islamic `origins' of Sufism, apparently because of the doctrines that the later generations of Muslims formed and developed. The answer to this problem lies in what a tenth century Sufi of Bukhara said, "Then (after the second generation of Islam) desire diminished and purpose flagged: and with this came the spate of questions and answers, books, and treatises" (p. 43). Moreover, as the author shows, most the Quranic verses and sayings of the Prophet, as well as the verses regarding all supererogatory rituals, prayers, and litanies - all of which occupy such a central place in Sufism - were among the earliest to be revealed, which is enough, for the author, to indicate that "a strong mystical element was present from the outset" (p. 40). The development that occurred did not introduce anything new nor change or modify the fundamentals of Sufism. Rather, it came about from, as Lings' puts it, the "inevitable movement from concentrated synthesis to differentiated analysis" (p. 43), which was an unavoidable movement that took place in varying disciplines and methods to address the "analogous change that was taking place in human souls" as they distanced from the Center (p. 43). Historically based as well as `qualitatively insightful' arguments are developed and adduced by the author to make this point.

Furthermore, the same must be said with the parts dealing with the doctrine of `wahdat al-wujud' and the path of gnosis being superior to, although embracing, the path of Love. For "it is Love within the general framework of Knowledge" (p. 46) as the author says. In this section a few words are also said by the author, mainly in his footnotes, about some of the misunderstandings of some orientalists about the `wahdat al-wujud' of the Sufis; dealing with its incorrect and often misleading translations - which themselves are the effect of an inaccurate understanding - of pantheism or `existentialist monism' and the like. Against the accusations of the Sufis as `falling into the pantheistic abyss' or even some of them as being `dualists'(p. 53) Martin Lings suggests that the point of view or better yet the `standpoint' of the Sufis should be considered; he says in his footnote, "The truth is that all the Sufis are `dualist' or `pluralist' at lower level; but it is impossible that any of them should have believed that at the highest level there is anything other than the Divine Oneness" (p. 126) and that explicit verses of the Quran like "Everything perisheth except His Face" (28:88) should be considered carefully. Unfortunately however, the general tendency has continued and misunderstanding still being entertained, namely, the accusation that scholars `from within' tend to read certain things, specifically certain doctrines, from the later periods into the former ones. Such charges though completely fall to the ground if it is understood that the `formulations' in question, intrinsic and essential meaning was very clear from the outset of Islam; one only has to take a look at a Quranic verse like, "He is the First and the Last and the Outwardly Manifest and Inwardly Hidden" (57:3) to pause and reflect about if they really understood the situation. New knowledge, in the Islamic tradition, can never be introduced due to the fact that the Quran contains all knowledge in `principal'; the findings of the later Muslims were, in a sense, a way of making explicit what were implicit in the Quran all along.

In brief, throughout the book, from the whole structure of its style, to the content of the chapters, to the language used to convey the content in such exquisite a manner, the entire `approach' to the book beginning with the fine introduction and ending with the beautiful poetry of the Shaykh, Martin Lings' `lived' participation in the Tradition that the Shaykh himself was apart of, resonates through the entirety of this book. It serves as an excellent and well written introduction to the life and thought of a twentieth century Sufi Saint and conveys to the reader with a `sincere interest' that the quest for the timeless Truth can still be made today as it was made in the `good old days gone by', a quest that the author himself undertook in his own life. As a good man once said, `it is a book about a Sage by a Sage'.

Super Sales on Super Heroes, by William D. Arand

In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one.

He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything.

Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game.

Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities.
With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job.

His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a Super Villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.

Surprisingly, not a whole lot changed. Politicians were still corrupt. Banks still held onto your money. And criminals still committed crime.

Though the black market has become more readily available.

And in that not so black market, Felix discovers he has a way to make his power useful after all, and grasps a hold of his chance with both hands.

Warning and minor spoiler: This novel contains graphic violence, undefined relationships/partial harem, unconventional opinions/beliefs, and a hero who is as tactful as a dog at a cat show. Read at your own risk.

Sandwich of build/trade, harem, anti-hero, and litRPG
By Some Average Guy
This is not a deep story, but a fun one. The main elements that make this story surprisingly great:

-Buildup of his own empire from scratch
-Villain doing good superhero stuff with villain's flare to it
-Some trading
-Cool tech/inventions
-Light harem action
-Character growth/leveling (specifically litRPG style, some will like others won't)
-Interesting abilities (typical of the super genre)

Only things that really nag me after reading this story:

-Start premise was a bit weak, but it was brief and we moved on so that's good
-The end. It was done poorly/rushed. Should have had another 10-15 pages setting everything right and tying up loose ends.
-The main character getting his hands dirty there at the end. Should have stayed true to form and found a way to get the job done using his own unique talents/characteristics. (Everything after reaching the elevator bottom was garbage.)
-Who was really the bad guy here? Yeah we kind of got a vague answer, but the point to the conflict was really vague and glossed over. He's just always under attack for what turns out to be a pretty thin reason that's answered in basically 2 or 3 sentences on a random page towards the end.

Despite those few flaws, this is really one of the best books of it's type I've read in a year or two. Not many come out with with these plot elements that are done well. (Similar recent non-super examples would include the Stavin Dragonblessed series by Loren K. Jones, ALICE by Charles Lamb, Wild Wastes by Randi Darren, and Destiny's Crucible by Olan Thorensen.) Keeps you turning the page for sure. Short enough for a half-day read.

I don't generally like most "super" stories, but this one was very solid. I'll buy the next in the series without waiting for reviews.

New take on Supers and LitRPG
By Steve-o LoBue
Lets start with the fact that this book hits LitRPG from an entirely new angle. I have never heard of a combination of niche genres quite like this, and the execution? Excellent. Nothing is as straightforward or black and white as it may appear. Much like reality. The MC is human, with human foibles and flaws, but the ability to adapt and grow based on the interactions of those around him. The MC at the beginning is wholly different from the MC at the end. Characters have true substance and motivations, not flat and 2d. Even my wife loves this book, and she hates Super Hero/Villain themed books. Great job William!

I very much enjoyed this book and am eagerly looking forward to the next in the series... soon?
By Kindle Customer
I'm new to the LitRPG genre, but have played the games in the past, and this is just like one - with super powers and buying / trading, and enough character development that you care what happens to the good guys, and the bad guys (in mean sort of way.) I'm not writing a book report here, and so won't break down the plot. I'm just saying that if you're at all interested in the genre (or even if you're not into LitRPG) this book is probably worth your time.
I highly recommend it and will certainly buy the followup. In fact, I'm planning to check out the author's previous trilogy "Otherlife", and will probably buy that too.

From the Back Cover

The Strategic Management of Information Systems: Building a Digital Strategy (4th Edition) is a comprehensively updated revision of a book regarded by many as one the leading and authoritative titles for practitioners, academics and students in the domain of information systems and technology (IS/IT) strategy. It brings together the implications of the significant advances in IT and the most useful current thinking, research and experiences concerning the business impact and strategic opportunities created by IS/IT.

Managing IS/IT successfully is becoming increasingly difficult in today's dynamic business and technology environments, where uncertainty, complexity and rapid business change are combined with the ever-extending capabilities of digital technologies and the multiple choices in the supply of IT services and infrastructure. At the same time ‘consumer IT’ has become an essential aspect of most people’s personal as well as their working lives, raising both awareness and expectations of what technology can do. However, despite the increasing business criticality of IS/IT, surveys continue to show that many organizations still struggle to deliver sufficient benefits from IS/IT investments and are concerned that IS/IT expenditure does not produce demonstrable ‘value for money’.

The challenge is, as it has always been, to harness digital technologies both in achieving alignment with current enterprise objectives and innovating to create new strategies and business capabilities. Where, when and how to invest in IS/IT are the key questions that managers have to grapple with, which is why an IS/IT (or digital) strategy is required. Devising and implementing this strategy depends on cultivating an organizational environment that supports and promotes open, informed and effective conversations enabling business management and IS/IT specialists to share their knowledge.

Joe Peppard and John Ward present a structured framework with tools, techniques and ways of thinking which provide a practical approach to building a digital strategy, expressed primarily in the language of business and management. The approach can be used by executives, managers and IS/IT professionals, working together, to combine their experience and skills to identify what can and needs to be done and how best to do it, so that IS/IT is managed strategically.

Lots of helpful info, but becoming dated
By AtopMtOlympus
I actually left the hard copy on the plane. DOH! But I'd already used it to make a general plan and then broke down and bought the digital version from lonelyplanet.com. (On a side note, the digital version and my smart phone were way, way convenient and new additions to the backpacking experience, but the ebook didn't have any pictures and some of the general sections at the beginning were missing like the highlights.)

This book gives a great overview of the country, and I always love the history and background sections in the beginning. In fact, I was able to have informed discussions and ask the good, information-gathering kind of questions about the revolution and political situation based almost entirely off what I read in the guidebook. I learned tons by talking to people while in Nicaragua too of course, but I wouldn't have know where to start or what to ask about without the LP crash course.

Some of the info about restaurants and places to stay is outdated, but the edition is from 2009, so that's to be expected. But tripadvisor.com and hostelworld.com and even the loneley planet forums are the best places to get that sort of time sensitive information anyhow.

I don't have much experience with any of the other guidebook brands, but I think a good rule of thumb is to go with the the one most recently published. Unless you're an LP diehard like me and you're willing to put in the extra research.

Poor sided information
By Luis A. Montenegro
This books gives the idea that Nicaragua is a dangerous place as the "rest of Central America", despite the fact that this country is among the 30 safest in the world.

It says be careful when you get down the bus, in an area which only happens to be the bus station from busses coming from Costa Rica, that indeed is a dangerous area, but any citi has red areas, well that is one.

But 95% of the tourist coming to Nicaragua come and land in different location, like the airport, and others which are more than safe.

Besides that, the book only shows one hostel in Nicaragua, which happens to be worst in town, there are at least 50 hostels, and B&B worth of mentioning, but seems like this hostel very badly rated in the country is paying advertising.

On the other hand there not many tourist books if you go to Nicaragua, that would be the only reason to buy it, but 60% of the information is inaccurate.

kindle edition really lacking
By yrstruly.
this review is about the kindle edition only and not the content of the book. this did not transfer well into kindle. too often linked text does not bring you to the right place. kindle guidebooks should be great as the hyperlinks allow one to easily jump to different places in a book. however, many of the links will bring you to a seemingly random spot in the book instead of the intended place.

additionally, one of my favorite features of lonely planet guides is the highlights section at the beginning of chapters. this transferred terribly to kindle - rendering the information unreadable. half of the information is lost. even by changing settings (smallest font size, line spacing, etc.) doesn't fully remedy the problem. i don't know why it's so messed up, but you lose great information this way.

the guidebook has good information, but i would recommend people to steer clear of the kindle edition.
