Slow book with a ludicrous plot line and a very bad ending
By Avid Reader
As many reviewers have already written, the plot is LUDICROUS and the tea scene at the end is absolutely MADDENING.

This book was slow and I was sort of shocked when the murder happened at about 50% of the book (I read it on my Kindle so I don't know page numbers.) I thought to myself "How are they going to fill up the rest of this book?" And I was spot on: this book could've ended at the 50% mark and I would've liked it more. On the plus side: it's an easy read that you can finish on a domestic flight.

How they are going to turn this into a movie is beyond me. No doubt, it will be a boring movie.

Basically, here's the book so you can save your money (there are no real spoilers):

0%: Meet Nora
5%: Start ludicrous plot line
10%: Meet a motley crew of annoying characters
25%: Tequila and cocaine
50%: Murder (an alcohol and drug-fueled murder? Ruh roh!)
60%: Nora can't remember what happened.
70%: Nora still can't remember what happened.
80%: "Oh why, oh why, can't I remember what happened?" asks Nora.
90%: Eureka, Nora remembers what happened!
95%: Nora's having tea with the murderer because killing someone sure makes me thirsty for some Earl Grey.
100%: Thank God this book is over.

A Mystery for Scooby Doo Fans
By Kindle Fan
I have to admit up front that I was very disappointed in In a Dark, Dark Wood.

The story centers on Nora, a 26 year old crime fiction writer who is sometimes referred to by other characters as Lee, Leonora, or Leo. Nora is invited to a bachelorette weekend party to celebrate the marriage of Clare, a person she hasn't seen in a decade. The reunion is awkward (Clare is marrying Nora's old boyfriend) and the guests include various stereotypes: the mentally unhinged Flo, catty Tom, stressed out new mom Melanie, and sassy best friend Nina. Toss in lots of alcohol, a litttle cocaine, and plenty of bad feelings and you have the makings of a really unpleasant party. And then there's a murder which leaves Nora battered with amnesia trying to put her memories back together.

Touted as a mystery in the Agatha Christie mold the story plays out more like a Scooby-doo tale. The author drops conspicuous clues repetitively. Two characters who are of similar build wear identical clothing (Jinkies!) and there's a shotgun hanging on the wall loaded with blanks (Ruh-roh). There are other warning signs as well -- no phone service, mysterious footprints and a missing cell phone. The author lays out the clues in an heavy handed, overt manner.

The characters come across as fairly shallow and juvenile. There didn't seem to be anyone to root for -- not even the murder victim. The ending is quite obvious -- although not to Nora which reinforces her characterization as incredibly dim (especially for a crime fiction writer). I don't want to give out any spoilers, but the tea drinking conversation near the end of the book is ludicrous.

I can not recommend this book.

Where Wizards Stay Up Late is the exciting story of the pioneers responsible for creating the most talked about, most influential, and most far-reaching communications breakthrough since the invention of the telephone.
In the 1960's, when computers where regarded as mere giant calculators, J.C.R. Licklider at MIT saw them as the ultimate communications devices. With Defense Department funds, he and a band of visionary computer whizzes began work on a nationwide, interlocking network of computers. Taking readers behind the scenes, Where Wizards Stay Up Late captures the hard work, genius, and happy accidents of their daring, stunningly successful venture.

Amazon.com Review
Considering that the history of the Internet is perhaps better documented internally than any other technological construct, it is remarkable how shadowy its origins have been to most people, including die-hard Net-denizens!

At last, Hafner and Lyon have written a well-researched story of the origins of the Internet substantiated by extensive interviews with its creators who delve into many interesting details such as the controversy surrounding the adoption of our now beloved "@" sign as the separator of usernames and machine addresses. Essential reading for anyone interested in the past -- and the future -- of the Net specifically, and telecommunications generally.

From Publishers Weekly
Hafner, coauthor of Cyberpunk, and Lyon, assistant to the president of the University of Texas, here unveil the Sputnik-era beginnings of the Internet, the groundbreaking scientific work that created it and the often eccentric, brilliant scientists and engineers responsible. Originally funded during the Eisenhower administration by IPTO (Information Processing Techniques Office) within the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), ARPANET, the Internet's predecessor, was devised as a way to share far-flung U.S. computer resources at a time when computers were wildly expensive, room-sized bohemoths unable to communicate with any other. The husband-and-wife writing team profile the computer engineering firm of Bolt Baranek and Newman, which produced the original prototypes for ARPANET, and they profile the men (there were virtually no women) and an alphabet soup of agencies, universities and software that made the Internet possible. And while the book attempts to debunk the conventional notion that ARPANET was devised primarily as a communications link that could survive nuclear war (essentially it was not), pioneer developers like Paul Baran (who, along, with British Scientist Donald Davies devised the Internet's innovative packet-switching message technology) recognized the importance of an indestructible message medium in an age edgy over the prospects of global nuclear destruction. The book is excellent at enshrining little known but crucial scientist/administrators like Bob Taylor, Larry Roberts and Joseph Licklider, many of whom laid the groundwork for the computer science industry.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Hafner (coauthor of Cyberpunk: Outlaws and Hackers on the Computer Frontier, LJ 6/1/91) and Lyon tell the fascinating story of some extraordinary computer scientists who, with the Department of Defense in the late 1960s, developed the Arpanet. It is based mostly on interviews with those scientists and engineers who designed and built a revolutionary computer network that spawned the global Internet. The authors dispel a widely held belief, propagated for years by the mainstream press, that the Arpanet and the Internet were developed to either support or to survive nuclear war. Rather, the project aimed to link computer resources at laboratories across the country and enable scientists to share research and computing resources over a network. An important historical work for most library collections.

Quite good--fills a need that was there
By B. PERKINS
When I started working at an ISP (Internet Service Provider), I did a lot of reading to bring myself up to speed on a variety of subjects. Whether the book's topic was routing, software, or even AOL, the first three paragraphs were always, "A Brief History of the Internet." Inevitably there was too little information, too general to be of any use.
Well, _Wizards_ does a great job with its subject matter. Pioneering names like Frank Heart, Vint Cerf, and J. C. R. Licklider all come to life. The book does cover some technical ground, but all on a very palatable level. Two things made the book so enjoyable: first, the authors do a good job of describing the brilliance of the Internet's creators. I was amazed that the basic concepts of networking were developed in a day and age when it took entire rooms to house the computing power of today's calculators. Second, the book does a good job not getting bogged down in the details. Instead, Hafner and Lyon concentrate on the people behind the ARPANET's creation, their quirks, collaborations and occasional conflicts; there's a lot of humour captured along the way. This wouldn't be the sole book I'd recommend as a purely technical history of the Internet; however, as a history of the underlying forces that brought the Net into being, such as BBN, the Dept. of Defense, and so many universities, I can't think of another book that's anywhere near as descriptive. Or interesting.

A Competent Account
By Joseph Pellerin
Where Wizards Stay Up Late is a competent, if slightly dry, account of the development of the ARPANET. I live for this kind of stuff, but Hafner fails to ever really engage me in the story - I found that I was plowing through the text as opposed to devouring it. As a history text, though, I was impressed with the even-handed, no-hype account.

Too regularly do authors of computer history suffer from hero-worship and "religious" dogma - their personal opinions coloring the story, till its credibility is at best strained (if not broken). Hafner does not fall into this trap - if she worships anyone or holds any personal religious leanings, none of it shows in the account. The writing is clear and technical without being unreadable by a layperson. Overall, there is a lot to recommend this book.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, I found the story to be dry and frequently bogged down. Hafner may actually have overdone the evenhandedness of the account - I felt little passion for the subject, and consequently was not drawn into the text. At the end, I felt more knowledgable about the subject, but not any more interested. A good historical account, but a less-than-enjoyable read.

Wizardry is an apt term
By DLH Fujimori
"Wizardry" is an apt term to describe the work of the many who laid the foundation for what we now know as the Internet. Katie Hafner and Matthew Lyon weave together the talents, personalities, idiosyncrasies, obstacles, and triumphs into a compelling and -- given the complexity of the Internet's development -- intelligible history. Hafner and Lyon tell of the work of engineers and researchers of Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), a Cambridge-based computer company backed by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), which ultimately connected computers across the country.
Readers of this book are spared excessive technical jargon and are instead are kept amused by the many lighthearted moments in the midst of perfectionism and high pressure to produce. This book gave me the context for understanding the hard work behind and rationale for distributed networks, packet-switching, and TCP/IP. I was intrigued by the "accidental" start of E-mail, which is one networking function I cannot do without. I was also inspired by the teamwork, passion and work ethic displayed by those involved, particularly because their intense focus often flew in the face of many detractors and disinterested parties who failed to appreciate the possibilities and usefulness of a distributed network.
The authors also describe the open culture that resulted from the collaborative work, which we see today. In contrast, the reluctance of BBN to release the source codes of the Interface Message Processors (IMP) was a harbinger of the intellectual property issues that would emerge in decades to follow.
So many players were involved in the creation of the Internet, that I found myself needing to back track to keep each person and his (all were men) contribution straight. Not a problem, though. The information in this book was fascinating. I found myself wanting to take my time to absorb as many of the details as possible.

Review
"'The author's master of this complicated subject is reflected in the way the book is clearly written and well-structured...an important accomplishment considering that the subject continues to cry out for debate and action.' - Environmental Politics (on the 2nd Edition) 'In this third edition of Environmental Hazards, Keith Smith has fashioned yet further improvements to what was already a highly readable, well-informed, broad ranging and accessible text. Essential reading for anyone interested in environmental hazards.' - Professor David K.C. Jones, London School of Economics 'An excellent guide to the field of natural hazards: comprehensive, thorough and well-organized.' - David Alexander, University of Massachusetts 'One area that is particularly appreciated by both myself and students is the overview of what a hazard is...the manner in which each hazard is covered, in terms of causes followed by a series of options for mitigation, in both developed and developing countries, is very useful.' - C. Holt, University College Northampton (on the 2nd Edition)"

Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers - On Deck No. 6, by Jim Goodall

The largest naval vessels in the world are the Nimitz-class super aircraft carriers. The Nimitz (CVN-68) launched the class when it was commissioned on 3 May 1975 and it has been followed by another 9 vessels. Each is more than 1,000 feet long, and displaces 103,000 tons at full load. Carriers are vital to the projection of US power around the globe: USS Nimitz responded to the Iran hostage crisis in the late 1970s, launched raids on Libya in the early 1980s and challenged China's growing navy in the Taiwan Straits in 1996. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first US warship to respond to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. USS Carl Vinson was the first to launch air attacks as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In the mid-1990s USS Theodore Roosevelt supported NATO air strikes against Bosnian Serbs during fighting in former Yugoslavia. USS Abraham Lincoln backed up Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in the early 2000s. Illustrated with more than 300 photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 80 pages.

Photo-Guide to America's Mightiest Warships!
By Mike O'Connor
The ten ships that make up the Nimitz class of aircraft carriers are the largest and deadliest warships on the globe. Topping out at 103,000 tons, Nimitz and her sister ships like George H. W. Bush, Theodore Roosevelt, John Stennis, Abraham Lincoln and Carl Vinson have protected American interests since the lead ship was commissioned in May 1975. Jim Goodall surveys these naval behemoths in NIMITZ CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIERS ON DECK, a 2009 Squadron/Signal release.

Goodall offers up 80 pages of full-color photographs of the various Nimitz carriers, their crews and aircraft. Many of the pix were taken by official Navy or Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding photographers so the images are uniformly well-done. The 250-odd photographs range from majestic shots of the carriers plowing through seas to close-up views of sailors at their station.

I had expected a bow-to-stern approach but Goodall's book isn't quite that straightforward. After three pages of 'under-construction' pix, the book presents five pages of various CVNs under way followed by eight pages of flight deck scenes, six pages of 'carrier birds,' nine pages of superstructure close-ups, two pages of bow/stern in drydock photos, 18 pages of crewmen doing their thing, etc. It seems a bit of a mish-mash but maybe that's just me.

In any case, NIMITZ CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIERS ON DECK is a visual delight, featuring hundreds of first-rate and often striking images. It should prove to be catnip for carrier enthusiasts. Recommended.

Competent Photo Essay of US Modern Aircraft Carriers Nimitz Class
By matt8386
Of course, the primary audience for this book is modelers - excellent color photos throughout of all of the nuclear powered aircraft carriers in the US Navy. The only technical data are in the captions, which get very repetitious after a few pages. Each photo caption ends with `this carrier was serving on in the Persian Gulf for 120 days' or some such information. That's ok for the first few shots of a particular CVN, but with such limited space, the author could have used this space to point out a few items of interest that the average reader might not have picked up on.

Aside from that observation, this book is everything you'd want it to be - shows the planes, supporting crew, below decks, bridge, navigation stations, ships in dry docks & under construction. There are many very interesting photos on high glossy paper.

This On Deck book serves its purpose, I bought it to help me build a model of the USS Nimitz and it's an affordable addition to the ol' library.

A good treatment of a classic carrier and class of carriers
By Brad
Jim has done a notable job capturing the essence of the Nimitz class carriers. Unfortunately, with today's limited access and tight-lipped security, much of what we would truly like to know cannot be told - at least not yet. That being said, the book is a nice overview of the various areas of the carrier and the aircraft that operate from its deck. The Nimitz class carriers and the subclasses have changed in many ways since their introduction into the fleet and the photos in this book highlight some of those changes for both the general public and for modelers. The photos are high quality and are helpful in allowing the reader to see inside the carriers and to get a glimpse at their operations. It would have been nice to have a a little more detail concerning the various antenna (this is an X and used for Y) and accompanying dates (to document the modifications).
