That Eighteenth Summer, by Raine O'TIerney

The summer of 2003, Ollie Hannigan's eighteenth summer, changes everything...

Ollie knows exactly where he's going and what his plan is: get a smokin' hot girlfriend (so she can cry over him when he enlists), join the military, work his way up to Army Ranger, and finally earn he respect of his big brother, Benjam.

But everything changes when a military car pulls up in front of the Hannigan household.

Now Ollie's world is in chaos. His friends have abandoned him, his plans are falling through left and right, and he doesn't know what he wants in life anymore. Plus, as if he wasn't already confused enough, his brother's best friend, Luca Santini, has caught Ollie's eye.

While Luca may be smokin' hot, he's definitely not the girlfriend Ollie was expecting!

Very sweet but heartbreaking story
By ~Jenny Is My Name~
I really really liked this book, as heartbreaking as it was...

Ollie is just a teenager and he's funny and has great friends...the story starts when he's just graduated from highschool and is thinking about taking a road trip to New Orleans with his friends...that doesn't get to happen though because he when he's on the phone planning it, the chaplan comes to his house and you don't have to know all about the army to know the reason they come knockin...
His brother died in combat. It shakes up their small little family, their dad loses it and checks out, his mom just kind of tries to hold herself together, I think she might be a little in denial and Ollie feels lost. The way each person is depicted is incredibly realistic... I cried for all of them, effin tear jerkers! I was warned though... it did him a little close to home for me but that's another thing that makes it awesome...
At his brothers funeral, he meets Luca... who served and was best friend with Ollie's brother Benjamin. What starts out as just spending time together, remembering Benjamin soon turns into much much more.
You can really tell Ollie's age in the beginning, but over the coarse of his coming to accept the loss of his brother and the progression of his relationship with Luca, you see him really grow up and mature. Again, very realistic....

Ollie also goes over and over again trying to decide if he should enlist as well... it's all he's wanted to do, but Benjamin knew he was doing it for the wrong reason and didn't want him to, although he never told Ollie that. Probably figured he'd have more time...It was a tough back and forth and Ollie really struggled with it, he knew it would disappoint his mom, of course after losing one child to the war, she would worry about losing the other one as well.
His parents take his relationship with Luca very well, they're very supportive and that was awesome, especially back in the late 90's early 2000's...DADT was still in effect and patriotic families tended to be less accepting... wasn't the "American way" I reckon... it's stupid if you ask me.... what business is it of mine who you fall in love with? I have two sons and I can say with 100% certainty I wouldn't care one way or the other as long as they're happy... I liked that Ollie's parents were like that.

Overall though this story is about grieving and loss and accepting and just finding your way after a loss so profound. Finding your way back to yourself, (even if you do have the help of an incredibly sweet, patient, understanding boyfriend like Luca... he was awesome)... I loved it all but especially the ending AND the HEA

Made my top 10 erotica romance list
By C. B
I fell in love with this book by the fourth chapter. I found it very riveting! The characters were well developed and I liked them. The relationships were believable. It was fun reading Ollie's inner dialogue. As a retired Vet, I appreciate the insight into the process of how our fallen are handled. Ollie's dilemma is something many volunteers go through. It was wonderful to see the progress everyone went through during the grieving process. One of the better written stories I've read on a long time. This was a well edited, well developed character driven book. I can't wait to read more from this author is this is an example of her quality of work. Well done, you!

Blew Me Away.
By Shay
When I downloaded this book for free, I wasn't expecting much. There's a mass of free Kindle books out there that are pure drivel. This isn't one of those books.

This books combines two things that... I honestly don't give a single shit about: gay men and wanting to serve in the military. And yet, even though I had no prior interest in some of its major themes, this book was still able to tug at my heart strings and keep me turning the page. Moral of the story: even if this book doesn't sound like something for you, give it a shot anyway. You'll probably like it more than you think.

What made this such a good book? The writing. O'Tierney's writing style is crisp, clean, and fast-paced. Not a single word is irrelevant. There's no excess, flowery prose, but no left out details either. The story is exactly as it needs to be. And because every word is made use of, the flow of the story is both consistent and fast-paced. I'm not a big reader, but I found myself carving time out of my schedule to sit down and read this book - and looking forward to doing the same thing the next day when it came time for me to put it back down.

Because the book is aimed at a teenage audience, it's an easy read. There's no hard thinking with this book, just a world and a story you can sit down and immerse yourself fully in with characters that you'll actually grow fond of and plot lines you'll both relate to and won't see coming. There are so many good subplots to this book that I wish I could tell you about, but I won't. I'll keep this review spoiler free. But I will tell you this: Just when you think this book can't get any sweeter, O'Tierney makes it happen. (I can see why she's called The Queen of the Sweetness, as it mentions in her biography.) I saw another review that called this book heartbreaking, and there are certainly parts that are, but as a whole this is one of the happiest books I've read in a while. While the characters may struggle, it's one of those books where you just know things are going to work out in the end. And they do.

One warning I'll give you about this book is that there are several instances of graphic sexual content. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - the scenes are well-written and aren't overly descriptive to the point of disgust - it was just something I didn't expect when I started reading this book. It seems like such a classic YA read, and I'm much more accustomed to G-rated YA. Those graphic scenes are somewhat rare and brief, though, so this certainly is an erotica by any means. Just be prepared.

I'm no expert on O'Tierney herself or what her publishing background is, but when I see a free book on Kindle that has less than ten reviews, I tend to immediately think that book is self-published - whether that's the case or not. I have no idea if this book actually is self-published, but it certainly doesn't read like it is. O'Tierney's writing style is nothing short of professional. And it's not every day that you get to read something written by a professional for free. There's no downside to giving this book a shot when it won't even cost you a penny.

And if you weren't convinced that I liked the writing, know that I've already downloaded a couple more of O'Tierney's free books. I'm looking forward to reading them, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this author goes.
