In this collection of 14 essays, Trinh, a writer, feminist, and filmmaker, explores unconventional documentary filmmaking and literary techniques. Typically, documentary styles have kept a distance between subject and viewer, creating a sense of mastery in the viewer. By stressing form rather than content, boundaries of the acceptable in artform are transgressed, resulting in a nonlinear movement that leads the viewer into a profound experience that does not have to make sense. In this well-documented book, Trinh explores semiotic ideas of Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes, along with the works of Zora Neale Hurston and Helene Cixous, among others. Illustrated with footage from her films, the form of Trinh's book plays a major role in the presentation of its content. A wonderful volume, this is recommended for academic libraries, especially those that support programs in film and women's studies.

Trinh Minh-ha is Chancellors' Distinguished Professor in Women's Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and Associate Professor of Cinema at San Francisco State University. Among her films is Surname Viet Given Name Nam. She is the author of Women, Native, Other: Writing Postcoloniality and Feminism and, most recently, has coedited Out There: Marginalization in Contemporary Culture.

This book is precisely what it needs to be: a concise but thoughtful introduction to the use of metadata as both a historical phenomenon and modern megaphenomenon. Metadata are supremely important in the world of big data, and Pomerantz does an effective job of selling the reader on their value. He is also careful to parse a wider definition of metadata than 'phone records,' showing where it can be used in less political applications like library of congress records or book jackets. This is also a kind oblique introduction to library and information science, insofar as Pomerantz assumes no knowledge of these topics and offers the reader the basics. For anyone new to metadata, library science or information science, this is a quick, informative read that will fill in a lot of holes. I don't think these are topics most people take the time to learn about, despite their very meaty role in modern life. -Ryan Mease

Sullivan untangles the complex relationships between class and race in contemporary white identity and outlines four ways this orientation is expressed, each serving to establish one s lack of racism: the denigration of lower-class white people as responsible for ongoing white racism, the demonization of antebellum slaveholders, an emphasis on colorblindness especially in the context of white childrearing and the cultivation of attitudes of white guilt, shame, and betrayal. Shannon Sullivan is Head of the Philosophy Department and Professor of Philosophy, Women s Studies, and African American Studies at Penn State University. She is the author and editor of many books, including Race and Epistemologies of Ignorance (coedited with Nancy Tuana), also published by SUNY Press.

Excellent Rare Insights

This is an excellent analysis of modern (post-modern) middle-class liberal thought processes. As Shannon Sullivan points out, these four major categories of distancing oneself from toxic portions of American history are unconscious. More importantly, making these items conscious such that we can cast light on the darkness of "colorblind" approaches demands that we face the issues so as to grow (hopefully) towards a less racist society. Ms. Sullivan's candor and precise--sometimes cutting-- observances are admirably displayed with humility. I am thrilled to discover such an esoteric and intellectual writer who is simultaneously contributing to a field (critical race theory) which has the potential to make such tangible differences in our lives.

This book is amazing. I teach in a masters program in higher education at Penn State and Love this book. Sullivan is spot on. My students who read it were angered and challenged by it, and they loved it!

About the Author
Growing up as the daughter of piano teacher Gladys Smisor, Jane began her childhood lessons with Leota Anderson in Hutchinson, Kansas. After graduating from Barnard College of Columbia University, she continued her studies with Isabelle Vengerova in New York, and received a Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Jane Smisor Bastien was formerly a pedagogy professor and director of the Preparatory Department of Music at Tulane University, where she had an opportunity to extensively research current methodology in developing the Bastien teaching materials for children.

Because she still teaches a large number of students in her home in La Jolla (San Diego), Jane's composing continues to be directly related to her own students' experiences. She knows what appeals to contemporary children and writes music that they will find fun to play. In recognition of their significant contribution to music and music education, Jane and her husband James Bastien were presented with the 1999 MTNA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Critical postmodern analysis

"Digital Play" critically analyzes the video and computer game industry and theorizes about its significance in contemporary society. The book is somewhat unusual in that it is the collaborative product of three authors, but the writing seems to blend perfectly and makes for a consistent and high-quality read. The end product is an accessible and entertaining book that could serve to introduce a wide audience to critical postmodern analysis.
Nick Dyer-Witheford of "Cyber-Marx" fame is one of the authors. Mr. Dyer-Witheford's influence is discernable in at least several sections where the post-Marxist themes of corporate control versus freedom that are evident in "Cyber-Marx" are used to very good effect. First, he deflates the wildly optimistic claims of techno-utopians such as Alvin Toffler, reminding us that technology remains in service to corporate profits and therefore narrows and limits the possibility of "choice, interactivity and empowerment" that digital games purportedly offer. Second, Mr. Dyer-Witheford points to piracy and hacking as evidence that freedom from corporate control and a return to "play" in its purest sense may yet remain possible.
The authors contend that video games are worthy of serious study because they represent the "ideal-type" postmodern commodity. So whereas the automobile is closely associated with the "industrial capitalism" of the Fordist era, the video game embodies the "information capitalism" of today's "perpetual innovation" society.
The ideal-type commodity does not mean that it avoids crisis, however. The authors posit that the accelerating "circuits" of technology, culture and marketing that drive postmodern society in general and the video game business in particular "can be broken or come into contradiction" in numerous ways. The authors go on to critique each of these three circuits and produce many pages of very thoughtful analysis.
For example, an interesting aspect of the industry that is often overlooked is manufacturing and the international division of labor. Electronic game equipment is often produced by proletariat labor in the poor countries of the South for the benefit of relatively wealthy consumers in the North. The authors point out that the game industry, like most capitalist enterprises that exploit the so-called free trade system in search of higher profits, will find it difficult to develop new markets for its products until it is willing to pay its third-world factory workers enough money to stimulate demand. In fact, the authors state that corporate managers should not be too surprised when intellectual property gets pirated by people who feel that they have been cheated by the economic system.
But probably the most stinging criticism concerns the close connection of games with Cold War research and development. The "militarized masculinity" that characterizes so many games originated here and has been perpetuated by corporate marketing in pursuit of profits. But the authors point out that if the industry fails to find successful alternative game genres and graphic violence continues to escalate, future interest in gaming may be jeopardized even as the potential damage to children exposed to such psychic intensity remains unknown.
In short, "Digital Play" is highly recommended to everyone interested in deconstructing the multi-faceted and increasingly fantastical world that has been brought to us by the "military and entertainment" complex.

A clever look at the global industry of interactive gaming

Books on electronic gaming and video game culture predominantly concentrate on the history of the industry or on nostalgic returns to retro gaming, often punctuated with coloured photos and screenshots. Digital Play is one of the few books currently available that provides an insightful look into the social, cultural, and economic relationships between game players, and the engaging game texts, technologies, and market forces of the information age. As interactive gaming continues to establish itself as a major global media business, it becomes increasingly important for us to employ a critical perspective of the blossoming industry. Kline, Witheford, and Peuter's Digital Play couldn't have arrived at a better time.
Digital Play is cleverly divided into three segments, each focusing on different bearings of interactive gaming but effectively converging into a single conclusive "coda." Discussion begins with a theoretical approach to analyzing gaming and its industry as it relates to circuits of interactivity including culture, technology, and marketing. Theoretical concepts collected from media theorists Marshall McLuhan and Raymond Williams, are successfully transferred to the medium of the videogame. What follows is a look at the existence of interactive gaming in a post-Fordist, and postmodern society of information technology and hyper-reality. This facilitates the understanding of historical circumstances of developing circuits of interactivity outlined in earlier chapters. While the first segment may seem theoretically and linguistically intense, it remains deeply involving and is ever mindful of the topic at hand: video games.
The second segment of Digital Play covers the historical background of games from their early beginnings in the military-industrial complex to the relentless corporate firefight known to many as the "console wars." However, unlike previous electronic gaming texts, the historical accounts are retold stressing the importance of technology, culture, and marketing. Digital Play thus provides a fresh and extremely entertaining parade through electronic gaming's past. What readers may find most absorbing in this stretch are the political-economic struggles endured by the gaming companies (Atari for example) who pioneered the industry only to meet with fierce competition and an unstable market for interactive entertainment.
The initial chapters of Digital Play concentrated on technology and communication studies, and the following chapters zeroed-in on history and marketing practices. However, this theoretical triad could not be complete without the presence of one more area of study: game culture as an industry and practice. In a chapter entitled "Workers and Warez" the authors examine gaming technologies on global levels of production and consumption, such as the exploitation of off-shore labourers and increasing levels of hacking, console "modding", and software piracy. Subsequent chapters provide studies in branding and licensing, violence and gender, and my personal favourite...political economy. Chapter 12 assembles the major themes of Digital Play, suggesting that Electronic Arts' best-selling game "The Sims" can be viewed as a microcosm of our own capitalist society, wrought with consumerist ideology. While we manipulate the digital Barbie dolls of our virtual technology, so too does a system of communication technologies, global enterprise, and postmodern digital culture manipulate our symbolic relationship with the logic of a capitalist system.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Digital Play and wouldn't hesitate to purchase any game-related books that any of the authors might publish in the future. Digital Play offers an engaging critical look at the gaming world's industry, technology, and culture, and should not be ignored by those looking to study interactive games from an academic viewpoint or by those simply looking for enjoyable reading.

Disappointing

I thought I would really enjoy this story of Robin's journey through her illness, but instead found her extraordinary support by famous and wealthy friends to change my mind. She did not have to worry about her job, her finances, her medical insurance, nothing that the common man or woman faces in this country when it comes to dealing with a serious medical illness. Instead of reading the details of the procedure she endured, we learned more about how her well to do support system tok care of her. I am happy Robin was successful in her fight for life, but had to think how much easier it was for her than the average Jane. Money does indeed buy happiness.

Making my mess My message.

For many years I have been dealing with an illness and because of it at times I have felt alone or lost. However something moved me to read Ms Roberts Book and I am glad I listened to the little voice that told me to do this. The journey I have been on and the journey I read that Ms Roberts has under took is a way to learn that no matter what your going through no matter what your "something" is you have to find a way to fight and a way to live and a way to have a life. Remember if you have an illness or if u know someone who is dealing with one make this a gift to them, as a way to help them on there journey.

What a great read. The story kept me turning the pages

What a great read. The story kept me turning the pages. I have studied the bible and recognized in this book what I had been taught as a child. However, the bible was never this entertaining. Jane was able to maintain the integrity of biblical teachings and wove them into a great novel. The ending took me by surprise and left me almost speechless once I fully understood what happened. You will love this book - read it soon - so you'll be ready for the sequel.

PEOPLE GET READY! JESUS IS COMING!

Page after page it kept me intrigued. I could not put the book down until finished. What a great way to present Biblical prophecy to help the reader understand. It is time for the church to realize where we stand concerning the end times and The Omega Watchers gives us great insight. I always had trouble understanding the end time prophecies and time lines, but this book made it so clear that anyone could understand. Scary to see how close we really are!

Would You Accept the Truth or Believe the Deception?

What if there was a secret so dark, your life would be in danger if you knew the truth – and even more so if you tried to share it? What if you found it was easier for many to believe a deception instead, would you still try to warn all of humanity before it was too late?

In the “The Omega Watchers” by Jane E. Woodlee Hedrick, the reader is asked these types of questions while they observe Gabriella and the team she is a part of as they look for the answers of ancient (present and future) mysteries possibly surrounding the sooner-than-they-realize coming salvation or destruction of humanity.

I struggled with whether to give 3 (It’s okay) or 4 (I like it) review. The writing is well done and most of the characters are brought to life, but I did find it rather slow in parts (thus originally thinking a 3 �). I understand why the author wrote as they did, and actually it fits well with the story, so maybe I was just hoping for a little more “action” (other than what was present) throughout. However, the last 1/3 or so truly brings everything to a well thought out conclusion (or at least an introduction) giving way to the potential for a highly anticipated sequel.

So, if you start reading and find it slow in parts (as I did), keep going. It will be worth the read, and it might just help you or someone you know on their spiritual journey in this life.
