A tragedy of a technicist
By Thomas Dworschak
This book is one of the most important novels (although Frisch calls it "report") in German language, and I like it immensely ALTHOUGH it is being treated in German lessons, and I was shocked when I read the review in which the reviewer writes that the translator left out the criticism of the "American Way of Life" (one of the most important parts in the development, I think: Walter Faber, the main person, is sitting in Cuba, enjoying tropical thunderstorms and swears about America because it "destroyed the white race". This was also the attitude of an archaeologist he had met six months before and he didn't understand it at all).
I won't tell you all the story because it's like in a criminal novel: you shouldn't know the end because if you knew it, you would read it with less attention. The main thing is that Walter Faber, an engineer who is absolutely hostile towards feelings, women etc., is overwhelmed by some happenings he would never have considered to be possible. He changes his views radically and becomes a real tragic person.
Frisch's use of foreshadowings makes the reader feel the tragedy even more closely, but in his language, there are some weak points (the detailed technical pieces of information which Faber, the 1st-person-narrator, uses), which have been transformed into a wonderful parody (called "Frener") by Robert Neumann.

The Techniker finds his soul
By A Customer
I read this book in the German and enjoyed it immensely. Walter Faber, a globe-trotting engineer, uses technology and his scientific worldview as a shield against other people and against his own humanity. When his shield fails him, he learns to open his heart and live fully. Regardless of whether you share Frisch's opinions about science, the book is beautifully written. Walter Faber is both horrifying and touchingly sympathetic. Despite the tragic plot, the strength of the novel is its small comic moments, of which there are many. If you just watch the movie (even the German-language adaptation, which is much more faithful to the book than the American film), you will miss almost everything that is worthwhile about Homo Faber. Read the book! (In German, if possible.)

The birth of one man's passion for life
By A Customer
This is my all-time favorite book! I read it as an undergraduate German major - in German, of course! The story has so many messages - how what we don't face will come back to us; how much of life we miss when we're to afraid to live it; how things become more intense and beautiful when love is in our hearts. The characters are developed in such a loving manner that I found myself liking and sympathizing with all, despite their faults. I think that this book makes a great summer read.

Contrary to the prior review, I would not recommend the movie based on this book. I was very excited when I heard that Sam Shepard was tackling this project, but I was ultimately disappointed. There is no replacing the real thing!

Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the Struggle for America's Independence, by Carol Berkin

The American Revolution was a home-front war that brought scarcity, bloodshed, and danger into the life of every American, and Carol Berkin shows us that women played a vital role throughout the struggle.

Berkin takes us into the ordinary moments of extraordinary lives. We see women boycotting British goods in the years before independence, writing propaganda that radicalized their neighbors, raising funds for the army, and helping finance the fledgling government. We see how they managed farms, plantations, and businesses while their men went into battle, and how they served as nurses and cooks in the army camps, risked their lives seeking personal freedom from slavery, and served as spies, saboteurs, and warriors.

She introduces us to sixteen-year-old Sybil Ludington, who sped through the night to rouse the militiamen needed to defend Danbury, Connecticut; to Phillis Wheatley, literary prodigy and Boston slave, who voiced the hopes of African Americans in poems; to Margaret Corbin, crippled for life when she took her husband’s place beside a cannon at Fort Monmouth; to the women who gathered firewood, cooked, cleaned for the troops, nursed the wounded, and risked their lives carrying intelligence and participating in reconnaissance missions. Here, too, are Abigail Adams, Deborah Franklin, Lucy Knox, and Martha Washington, who lived with the daily knowledge that their husbands would be hanged as traitors if the revolution did not succeed. A recapturing of the experiences of ordinary women who lived in extraordinary times, and a fascinating addition to our understanding of the birth of our nation.

From Publishers Weekly
Confronting "the gender amnesia that surrounds the American Revolution," historian Berkin (A Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution) offers a lively account of women's various roles in the long, bloody conflict. Early forms of resistance included boycotting British cloth--and thus dusting off retired spinning wheels--and tea as women used "their purchasing power as a political weapon." As the conflict became a war in city streets and the neighboring countryside, houses became war zones; ordinary women often served as spies, saboteurs and couriers. Camp followers (often soldiers' wives) provided logistical support (cooking, washing, sewing, nursing, finding supplies) and occasionally even fought; prostitutes kept up soldiers' sexual (and social) morale. Generals' wives, "admired while the ordinary camp followers were often scorned," accompanied their husbands in different style; they boosted morale with dinner parties and dancing. Berkin reaches beyond white "American" women to chart the experiences of Loyalist women ("targets of Revolutionary governments eager to confiscate the property of... traitors"), Native American women (for whom "an American victory would have... tragic consequences") and African-American women (whose "loyalties were to their own future, not to Congress or to king"). First-person accounts lend immediacy and freshness to a lucidly written, well-researched account that is neither a romantic version of "a quaint and harmless war" nor "an effort to stand traditional history on its head." From Booklist
Historian Berkin begins with the premise that American women's participation in the struggle for independence was not restricted to such celebrated figures as Abigail Adams, Martha Washington, Betsy Ross, and the apocryphal Molly Pitcher. Although conventional histories have traditionally been limited to chronicling the heroic exploits of a handful of women as opposed to masses of men, in truth the creation of a new nation required the active involvement of countless numbers of females. The author has subdivided these many stories into chapters recounting the experiences of women who protested against English policy, women who toiled on the homefront, women who followed the army, generals' wives, Loyalist women, Native American women, and African American women. What eventually emerges is a splendid overview of the remarkable contributions made by a cultural cross section of women during the course of the American Revolution. Margaret Flanagan

Review
"Carol Berkin has merged the craft of the skilled historian and the
sensitivity of a master storyteller with her sensibilities as a
pioneering scholar of women to produce the best narrative of how women
of diverse backgrounds experienced the American Revolution."
--Edith Gelles, author of Portia: The World of Abigail Adams

Revolutionary Mothers is an accessible, lively blend of great story-telling and recent
scholarship, the most comprehensive study yet published of women in the American
Revolution. Readers of all descriptions will enjoy and learn from it.
--Mary Beth Norton, author of In the Devil’s Snare: The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of 1692

“Revolutionary Mothers is vintage Carol Berkin, incisive, thoughtful and spiced with
vivid anecdotes that add another dimension to the narrative. Don't miss it.”
--Thomas Fleming, author of Liberty! The American Revolution

"Revolutionary Mothers is a treat to read. Not only is Carol Berkin a skillfulwriter, but she
has placed women squarely at the center of the independencemovement. By showing the
different roles women played, she moves the battlefield to wherever women were forced to
make choices and employ their talents. Elite, poor, Euro, Native, and African American
women collide in Berkin's book, as do the rebels and loyalists who were once friends and
neighbors. A valuable and readable book."
--Elaine Crane, author of Ebb Tide in New England: Women, Seaports, and Social Change,
1630-1800

Berkin’s prose is easy to grasp
By Waites Family
Revolutionary Mothers is an overview of the role women played in the revolutionary war. Since it was a home front war, American women were very close with the events. Among other roles, some acted as spies or messengers, organized funds for the troops, took care of homes and businesses while the men were away, or were actively involved in battles.

Revolutionary Mothers is a short, fairly general overview of the topic at hand. I think it is most suitable as supplemental material for a history course or as an introduction to the topic. I would have appreciated more depth to some sections, but perhaps the material was too scarce for this to be possible.

Because of this, the book does not have much of a narrative structure and I found it hard to retain interest while reading. That being said, Berkin’s prose is easy to grasp. She never ventures into the territory of academic jargon.

Of all the chapters, I found the one on Native American women to be the most enthralling. The material Berkin presents was entirely new to me, and I had never seen it covered in any of the numerous United States history courses I’ve taken over the years.

I would recommend Revolutionary Mothers for people looking to learn about women’s role in the Revolutionary war and how the war impacted women.

Great Read.
By College Stealth
This is a really enjoyable book, one that even non-History buffs will enjoy; such as students. At first it looks kind of dull, but Berkin does a really good job of describing aspects of the Revolutionary War that are not often touched upon; these include camp wives (destitute and poor women who followed the soldiers around) and areas of rape that women may have faced and how it was portrayed in the newspapers against either side. One nice aspect is comparing British Camps to American camps, different treatments and philosophies. It is a pretty powerful narrative into a side of the war that is never thought about or discussed, but done with a large number of primary source documents that help to eliminate the element of Berkin "making up" a narrative about the events; rather, from the perspective of the women who lived it and their own journals, letters, and notes.

I love this book
By Jill Fields
I love this book. I covers women's contributions leading up to and throughout the American revolution. From the wealthiest ladies to the poorest and enslaved women and their everyday strength and endurance during war. Myths are dispelled, and true heroes are revealed. Wonderful!

Unclear Who the Intended Audience Is
By customer
If you are an ESL (English as a Second Language) learner looking for a handy list of words that you ought to have in your vocabulary, then you might find this book to be useful. If you are writing a paper for school, or a report for work, you could also get something out of it. The question is, how much will it help you?

WHAT'S IN THERE?
----------------------------------
Most of the words are rather basic. So, it would seem to be geared toward language learners. Yet, the entries are written at a relatively high level. They begin with fairly standard dictionary definitions for the word, followed (in some cases) with explanations of usage, and related words/phrases.

DOES THIS APPROACH WORK?
----------------------------------
This approach works well for a word like "rapid" on page 103, where the author has the example sentence "There has been a rapid rise in sales." Not so well for "sanguine" on page 112, where the author has the example sentence "He is sanguine about the remorseless advance of information." I have used the word sanguine in conversation before, but I can think of many other words that I would recommend mastering instead if you are at a level where "rapid" is causing you difficulty.

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
----------------------------------
A book of 1001 words at the same level as "rapid" for a language learner would be great. A book of 1001 words at the same level as "sanguine" for a college student or a person in business would be great. This book is an ungainly mix of the two. There are other books that address both audiences better.

OTHER BOOKS
----------------------------------
First, I would recommend you consider buying this book for the fantastic lists of words at the back (pages 147-166). Then, take a look at the following works. They are arranged from basic to advanced:
-Cobuild English Language Dictionary 2nd Edition: Helping Learners with Real English (Cobuild Series): Impressive reference work for language learners. Armed with the list of words from this book, you should be able to make good use of the dictionary. I think it has something to offer native English speakers as well, so it is worth a look.
-Choose the Right Word: Second Edition: Good for language learners AND businesspeople/students (all of us?). I think it is more successful than this book at addressing the needs of both audiences.
-The Synonym Finder: It lacks explanations and usage examples, so it is probably most appropriate for those with a high level of English language ability. I feel that the entries are far more helpful than those in a regular thesaurus.
-The Thinker's Thesaurus: Sophisticated Alternatives to Common Words (Expanded Second Edition): Good for anyone who wants to make the jump from a high level of English language usage to an advanced one. You may be using the word "intercourse" in your everyday speech and writing, but what about "houghmagandy," tribadism," "venery," or "intromission?" Consider this book a step-up from your regular thesaurus.

Leap year tip
By Phillip Taylor MBE
AND FOR THE LEAP YEAR TIP… BUY THIS FASCINATING BOOK ON ADVOCACY HINTS!

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

Yes, this superb little pocket book by Leslie Cuthbert entitled “365 Daily Advocacy Tips” is published by Bloomsbury Professional and gives advocates (solicitors and barristers) across all legal fields some well thought-out, useful and effective practical tips on the advocacy skills needed for 21st century.

These special skills have been honed down, developing over the years to suit the changes in style and judicial attitudes of the day. The book includes the impact of psychology - quite important as any reader and analyst of English Literature will know- to enable practitioners to be more confident in the way one advocates now, and to be of relevance to current practice in 2015 with all the mistakes of the past firmly behind us.

“365 Daily Advocacy Tips” is undoubtedly a text for all advocates, from the beginner just out of law school to the experienced (or think they are experienced) practitioner. We feel having read this book that people in many walks of life, not just lawyers, can benefit from the tips whether involved in civil, criminal or other proceedings especially with the growth of litigants in person in the post ‘legal aid for all’ era.

As the author says, the tips are non-jurisdiction specific and so they are relevant to advocates all over the world, including our rather brash colleagues in the North American continent! The content of the book covers a range of helpful quotes, points from psychology and of course best practice points to gain the requisite brownie points with the judge.

Cuthbert has included brief snippets of useful information giving as wide a range of interesting pointers and hints as possible which will give us all a few ideas about how to tackle some of the more hideously difficult cases. Unlike most books about advocacy, this one provides useful insight into psychology which is often overlooked, and it also explains how to break down the rules of argument and rhetoric which is a good discipline to adopt early on in your practice.

One other constructive observation is the coverage of acronyms to help remember techniques (a good training device), useful quotes from history and literature which can be used in cases (but don’t bore the judge) and references to other texts both legal and non-legal which makes the book more than just a guide for the lawyer advocate. Politicians might also find it helpful!

One of our contemporary expert advocates who are established as seriously good in court is Iain Morley QC. He is well quoted when he writes in favour of these tips saying:

"this book is a good idea… what I like is there will be one idea every day - and only one. Your mind will not get jumbled. Think on what you read... some ideas you will like. Others may not work for you. With advocacy, this is always the way. But the point is to try things out - one day at a time."

One can see from Iain’s seminal work “The Devil's Advocate” now in a third edition from Sweet and Maxwell of such sage advice for modern practice.

The advocacy suggestions given throughout are rightly described as “packed with pithy, serious, amusing, and thought-provoking tips for each day of the year, from a refreshingly diverse range of sources” and of course, it is the originality of the advocate’s approach that can make a profound difference to the outcome of a case.

What we liked in particular was that the tips give a fascinating insight into the principles of good advocacy whilst offering essential practical knowledge of related topics such as how people make decisions, indicators of credibility and the 'rules' of argument and rhetoric.

And unlike many advocacy guides “365 Daily Advocacy Tips” gives a refreshing insight into this world of psychology and how to break down the rules of argument and rhetoric so you can succeed with your approach.

It offers most suitable acronyms to help one remember techniques with useful quotes. Lengthy and studious volumes of advocacy have had their place and they don’t feature much in the ‘teaching’ of advocacy if it can, indeed be taught, but once in a while just a morsel of advice might be needed to change an entire day's work and this is where it might be found.

Cuthbert’s list is a calendar of tales and tips from the world of advocacy and it does prove an able companion for every advocate serious about continuous and incremental improvement in their knowledge, skill and practice with the added bonus of plenty of space to jot down your own ideas throughout the book.

We can give you some examples taken directly from the book without spoiling it for those readers new to advocacy: when questioning always remember to KISS: “Keep it Short and Simple”; and in Cross-Examination (XX) aim to TELL the witness the answer you want rather than ASK for a response such as "you were at home, correct?" not "were you at home?"- see the subtle or not so subtle difference; and never forget that correlation does not equal causation as the author points out.

Some common sense points are also explored: do not read out the entirety of your argument (in other words written down as it doesn’t work and remember your delivery!) or seek to memorize the totality of what you wish to convey (because that doesn’t work either).

The author mentions that a common helpful approach is to remember the introduction and the last paragraph which is a basic structural point: "begin with the end in mind" is a useful concept to focus upon. Absolutely right!

Other sensible guidance includes: how the advocate should dress (outside formal robing) and how to present oneself which can be an incredibly important factor even in 2015 after years of sloppy dressing however ones feels about this.

And remember the nature of the judiciary itself as one judge has put it: "the burden of proof is on the advocate in the polyester suit!" Hm! But please do not think that this is some sort of sartorial snobbery- it isn’t, it’s merely a practicality in reality… and that is why Cuthbert’s book is an exercise in reality and how to win in 2015… getting the book is tip 366.

Tom Ford, by Tom Ford, Bridget Foley

Tom Ford has become one of fashion's great icons. In the past decade, he transformed Gucci from a moribund accessories label into one of the sexiest fashion brands in the world. His designs have increased sales at Gucci tenfold and have helped build the Gucci brand into the luxury goods conglomerate that it is today. Ford brought a hard-edged style synonymous with 21st century glamour to his clothes, and Hollywood sat up and took note. This book is a complete catalogue of Ford's design work for both Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent from 1994 to 2004. It chronicles not only Ford's clothing and accessories designs for both houses, but also explores Ford's grand vision for the complete design of a brand, including architecture, store design, and advertising. Tom Ford features more than 200 photographs by Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Terry Richardson, Craig McDean, Todd Eberle, and numerous other photographers including many previously unpublished images. Published to coincide with his departure from Gucci, this book has been created with Ford's full cooperation and every page reflects his exceptional taste. It is Ford's testament to a career of singular moments reinventing the boundaries of style and sensuality in clothing.

From Publishers Weekly
This enormous compendium may be Ford's swan song as a designer, as he recently announced that he was quitting fashion to direct movies. But for the last 10 years, as the creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, he took the brands in fresh directions. This huge, slipcased Festschrift checks in at 11"14", and covers each of the Gucci years individually, compiling product shots, ads, runway candids, snippets of Ford wisdom ("I think you have to have personality at a brand—otherwise, it's just clothes"), Gucci-sporting celebrities and commercial stills. Vogue's Anna Wintour and Vanity Fair's Graydon Carter contribute a foreword and introduction respectively. The much-covered growth at Gucci and YSL are the real story behind the book, to the point where the press chat credits Ford with "carving out a new industry archetype: the businessman designer." But the 375 color and b&w photos, all culled from existing fashion archives, is more of a look back at how Ford's creations were presented (including year-by-year portraits of the photogenic Ford himself), rather than what led to their creation, how they were actually made or how they fit into the culture at large. As a 10-year time capsule of brand fashioning, the book succeeds perfectly.

It is a decent and acceptable effort. But:
By miles
I have witnessed the rise of this man and his designs over the years, and I must say it is rather difficult not to be impressed and seduced by him. He is what he is and he is quite clearly aware this mere fact. And suffice it to say, he is most certainly not afraid or bashful to share his meticulously-crafted and polished existence with the rest of the world.

This man was the biggest ground-breaker since Giorgio Armani and the late Gianni Versace when he was at the helm of Gucci and YSL. And he somehow singlehandedly directed, dictated and decided on the Milanese style during the late 90s and early 00s. He became one with the company he was working for, while the world beneath his fingertips was rapidly changing. At the eye of this storm that altered the fashion business irreversibly and prepared it for the next century, he made the conscious decision to mold his identity over Gucci to which he has given so much. Tom Ford restructured a new personality and stance for both Gucci, and YSL to a lesser extend. From the very top to the bottom; finest detail in image, production, style, PR and most importantly, in business. It has always been hard to resist his presence and the influence that he interminably exuded in style.

Mr. Ford is creative alright, most certainly possesses a sense of composure and finesse, ever so perfectly walks the walk, talks the talk, and refines and redefines design according to what he decides to be the most primed and perfected. He seems to have an answer for everything, because he swiftly places himself as the center of his own universe - the ultimate tastemaker and the demi-God of a designer. Perhaps the 'Oscar Wilde' of his era. I truly admire this vivid character, since his story will eternally be the tale of a luminous vision and forceful manifesto in fashion.

And then there is this the book.

For a hardcover block of a weight heavier than my fridge, it is undeniably and adamantly vapid. There are more empty pages here than the ones with some insightful and sensible text on. The book favors the more celebrity-oriented imagery focusing on a glitzy nothingness over the actual designs and the vision that sustained them. It rejoices in its lack of depth and dimension. The designer's self-indulgent proclamations, which the book features regarding his accomplishments and contentions in fashion and his place in it, are generally insipid and somehow come off as seriously reduced. I would expect some form of wordplay from Mr. Ford and his editors which should have been elegant, concise, and substantial all at the same time.

It is just empty. Why putting images of the likes of Lil Kim or Eve seemed to be more pressing and suitable than a few more shots from his runways, sketches, houses, office space, mag covers, I will never know.

It is very hard to find the images or prints of his designs, the campaigns including the compelling perfume ads that he executed and the accessories -from watches to the infamous bamboo heel stilettos- which he oversaw. He did not insert any of these iconic images that made him who he is internationally, and instead, we see a captivating dress on a gorgeous model, and on the facing page we had to see the exact same dress on the pop culture personality Lil Kim on a very poorly-lit and arbitrary tabloid shot.

I don't know how much of his creative decisions went into the actual editing of the book, but this is somewhat insensibly executed. This should not sustain itself as a mindless photography book, enjoying a comfortably numbing visual mediocrity. It is a book titled 'TOM FORD' in obnoxiously colossal capital letters, but you do not get the sense of his presence at all. I did not expect a biography obviously, and I am happy that it is a visual book, because I always thought that the guy is more of a two-dimensional personality than a single-dimensional one - only defined by self-congratulatory adjectives. However, for a man that has a lot to say and show, there is a lot that is lacking between the covers of this portfolio, standing tall with over 400 glossy pages.

Needless to say, I think any price is reasonable for this man and his book that at the very least looks gorgeously architectural, but still... This is the closest he came near imperfection (literally: my first copy was printed incorrectly - had two introductions and no interview - changed it later.) Moreover, I do not believe this book stands as a celebration for him, but it is almost like the talented designer decidedly attempted to hint what and how much Gucci will lose when he is gone, including his celebrity fans and the overall smoke-and-mirrors pizazz which he interminably pumps and pumps and pumps...

Tom Ford's Most Magnificent Project Yet
By Jason Crawford
There is no doubting that Tom Ford is the sexiest man on the planet, there is no doubting the man is one of the most talented designers. But this booklet culminates into one of the greatest publishing works I have ever seen. I was mesmerized by the packaging, intrigued by many of his choices for photographs to use and left saying, I would wear his clothes any old time. He was one of the first designers who brought sex to high fashion. I've been a tough critic many times on many publications but this one is by far the most oustanding and innovative and individual work of publishing that I've ever seen. Of course could we expect any less from Tom Ford, who has done nothing but outstanding projects from the time he left the Texas town he came from? This man is one of the greats of our time. I just hope he continues to succeed. Thanks! And by the way, buy this book, it is well worth every penny and it's a great conversation piece for any dinner party. Put it out on the coffee table and watch the fingers flip through the most glossy and elegant pages of any published work yet.
