Amazingly comprehensive and deep.

Swale's Genre Analysis provides a holistic and refreshing view of the ever-developing fields of English language learning and teaching, and academic discourse. Although this work was published over 20 years ago, it remains strongly in force providing theoretical and practical bases about the importance of concepts like genres, texts, register, functional grammar, discourse community, task, communication in EFL, ESL and EL1 teaching/learning.

Fantastic book on genre analysis

This book is awesome for giving an introduction to GA. It also gives a good overview of the CARS model and other tips for evaluating genre. It's one of the books I kept from grad school and still use from time to time in teaching ESL writing courses.

A must have!

Now in its second printing, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in doing genre analysis, especially in the fields of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Second Language (L2) writing. Almost any article on the subject that has appeared in print within the past 20 years cites Swales at least once, and more likely multiple times. His IMRD (Introduction-Methods-Research-Discussion) structure, moves analysis model, and mixed-methods approach have all been tremendously influential. At the same time, Swales emphasizes commonalities with other fields like Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and New Rhetoric that may allow for more cross-disciplinary collaboration and, ideally, greater insights into the ways in which genres both shape and are given shape by the writing we do.
