New and Improved, it the ATHENIAN ACROPOLIS!!

Robin Rhodes' intuitive approach to one of the most discussed monuments in the history of art and architecture equips the reader to comprehend the work of a society which, facing destruction, re-interprets a building tradition hundreds of years in the making to express the innovative, nostalgic, and brilliantly defiant nature of the turbulent 5th century B.C.E. Drawing from scuptural attitudes, ritual practices, and political atmospheres, Rhodes places the Athenian Acropolis not at an assumed "zenith" of Greek architecture, but in a very alive and therefore constantly evolving context of artistic achievement. This books appeals to those who enjoy free thought in the most enlightening sense of the words.

Extremely clear, useful study

If you are interested in Greek Architecture, this book is great for examining the Athenian Acropolis as a whole, and how the structures function in relation to each other, and to the viewer. Compared to some of the other books on the subject, this book was extremely readable, not to mention informative. To the first reviewer -I actually had Professor Rhodes for a class several years ago, and I have to say I totally disagree with your assessment. I learned volumes from him, and he couldn't have been a nicer person.

Agile Done Right!!!!

I was excited to see that Mr. Ambler was working on Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) and was looking forward to this book. One of the biggest challenges I have is that most of the successful agile teams I interact with are isolated small teams using Scrum out of the box. It is working on the projects that have small teams with small scope, usually building one application in isolation. They don't have to be concerned with enterprise level integration.

The small successful teams I have seen also do no architecture. Although the end result is exactly what you do not want for high modifiability, they simply get it live. Usually a little buggy and slow, but they make it live nevertheless.

That is not true of all the projects I interact with. There are some large enterprise wide Scrum initiatives. The successful ones brought in an external Scrum coach to train them. Because of the complexity of the project they were also forced to do architecture and design. They ended up back at more of an iterative process. By the time they were done modifying the Scrum process, beside some Scrum names, they were much closer to the Unified Process than Scrum.

Until now my primary resource for information, that I also consider good information, implementing agile practices at an enterprise level has been Scaled Agile Framework. It is completely covered in the book Agile Software Requirements: Lean Requirements Practices for Teams, Programs, and the Enterprise. The Scaled Agile Framework is great,but I am glad to have this second resource!!! The attempts to sell Scrum of Scrums for dealing with enterprise level concerns has failed miserably.

It has been a wild ride. When it was all about UP, RUP, EUP, PLE, and Waterfall I was always in a battle to trim back the process ceremony in order avoid waste being template zombies. Then the Agile Age of Aquarius took over and I couldn't get anyone to give any thought to anything before riding off into cowboy coding bliss. The majority of the projects went from tons of worthless documents to tons of worthless code!!!!

After spending a lot of time battling the Agile Age of Aquarius coding cowboys I am so thankful some of the leaders in the industry, like the authors of this book, are starting to swing the pendulum back the other way. I just wish people would get that it's about tailoring to meet the needs of a project with the resources available. One shoe size doesn't fit everyone.

DAD is a hybrid of agile methods including Scrum, XP, Agile Modeling, Lean, Agile Data, and the Unified Process. It does what so many successful Agile projects are doing today that are larger in size. It uses what works, when its needed, and leaves the Agile Zealot Elitist Attitude behind. It is so refreshing to read an Agile book without the attitude.

DAD recognizes Scrum's shortcomings as primarily focused on management and brings back architecture and includes agile development practices that are easily excused from most Scrum projects.

DAD includes phases. It includes a project initiation and release activities that are missing from Scrum. DAD has three phases Inception, Construction, and Transition.

DAD also comes in two flavors, basic and advanced. The primary difference is that advanced is for more experienced teams that can take advantage of lean strategies which eliminates the iterations and the work item stack in favor of the work item pool. The book primarily focuses on the basic DAD process.

The only complaint I have about the book is that the diagrams showing the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Basic, and the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Advanced should have been full page diagrams. They are too small to read in the book. It is not really a big deal since they are available on the web.

The book is really well written. It is very detailed and also entertaining making very easy to read. Throughout the book "Lessons from the Trenches" sidebars bring real world experience to the topics being covered.

The authors also include a case study for each of the phases they cover based on a project that builds a point of sale system. This gives the reader the opportunity to see the artifact creating activities in action.

All in all I found the book to be an excellent resource for the agilist looking to move beyond small develop teams. It is an absolute must read for enterprise architects and other senior management working in the IT shop.

Many "agile" buzzwords describing a 30 year old process

Ultimately, when you strip the text of the agile terminology, what you get is an anecdotal description of a standard iterative approach, much better delivered in books like Walker Royce's "Software Project Management - A Unified framework". It reiterates what many software professionals already know: "Iterative" done right is agile. Worse, it brings no concrete metrics to back any of the claims and recommendations. The book addresses another well known fact: Traditional agile (usually meaning Scrum) does not scale up well for Enterprise IT projects requiring large project teams and delivering complex solutions.
The only redeeming value I found in the book is that it concentrates many well known engineering and Project Management best practices, but then again, books like Capers Jones's "Software Engineering Best Practices" do it better and back their findings with facts from well researched studies.

Finally, someone made an agile strategy for the enterprise.

Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) adds yet another agile `flavor' to the many currently floating out there. What differentiates DAD from the other Agile flavors is that it incorporates many of the best practices of the non-Agile methodologies in order to achieve what the authors refer to as `Agility@scale'. Too often, agile practices can involve starting from scratch and working in a vacuum. This will work well for small, self-organizing teams working on isolated software development. For the rest of us working in Enterprise I.T., working on small, isolated teams is simply not an option. The integration points too many, the effort too large, infrastructure too intensive or costly and the co-ordination costs are high.
This is where DAD steps in. The authors ambitiously strive to seek a balance between the best of the Agile and Non-Agile project management body of knowledge. Their emphasis is on delivering solutions, not just software. Also, the authors also note the wisdom of leveraging existing infrastructure and enterprise solutions without building from scratch. This is still an Agile approach but one focused more on realities of the medium to large I.T. implementations rather than the small ones. Whereas most Agile approaches strive to keep teams as small as possible, this approach attempts to scale them up for larger projects by creating (potentially) multiple small teams but by putting in place a minimalist project management co-ordination necessary to keep those teams working for the same goals. The authors leverage Lean practices, Extreme Programming (XP), Open Unified Process (OpenUp), Scrum, Agile Modeling and Agile Data approaches, as well as a number of other sources, to scale up the successes that Agile approaches have had on smaller implementations.

All in all, this is a very good book on a very much needed topic. With all the acronyms and frequent project manager-speak, it can be a little rough of a read. This is a good choice for a Project Manager or Team Lead who is struggling to fit their enterprise effort into the small teams recommended by most Agile methods.

The content of this book is okay, but the cost is unreasonable for a thin paperback. Due to the cost, I plan on turning it back in for credit but due to the construction, it doesn't hold up well at all. It should be more like $45.

One of the best books on all things instructional design that I have read

This book is an overview of the field of IDT. It is a must have for the bookshelf of every instructional designer and one of my all time favorite IDT books. If you are looking for a how to manual or guide this is not it, but if you are an instructional designer and want to understand your field better, you will enjoy this book. I have a large assortment of IDT books, but I know that this one will be one of the best research references that I have.

Nice story! I haven't read a scottish historical since Julie Garwood wrote them. I felt happy and nostalgic reading Battlesong.

Laren is sweet and intelligent. She made the best of the life that was forced upon her at such a young age. I'm so glad Arthur ended up being a good husband, even if he was a bit gruff at first and didn't think Laren was capable of all she'd accomplished with his lands. When he stood up for her to the old steward, I fell in love with him! And, okay, I wanted to bash him over the head with a frying pan once or twice near the finale. "Just...listen...to your wife...moron!"

But it all ended well. I wish I could've seen Laren's meeting with her visitor at the very last. Hmm...maybe it'll be in the next book in the series. Fingers crossed!

As Brian Carrier is to file system forensics and Harlan Carvey is to Windows registry analysis, Andrew Hoog is to the Android operating system. The level of detail in this book demonstrates a deep understanding of this complex and unique operating system. Chapter 1 begins with an overview of both Android and Linux in general. Instructions are provided for creating a virtual machine environment so the reader can follow along with the examples in the book. Throughout, the reader is encouraged to follow along, and ample opportunities are provided. This is highly appreciated as most technical books overwhelm the reader with information rather than guide them along the way. Chapter 2 presents an overview of the hardware that is supported by the Android OS. Chapter 3 begins the discussion of the Android OS proper. Included in this chapter are instructions on augmenting the previously created VM with the Android SDK providing additional tools for use in analysis. Chapter 4 is devoted to discussing the file systems likely to be encountered in the Android environment. Special attention is paid to YAFFS and YAFFS2. Chapter 5 discusses securing the data within the device. Also presented are recommendations for securely using Android devices in an enterprise environment. Additional advice is given for both users and developers to limit the exposure of sensitive data. Chapter 6 covers the most significant portion of the book with instructions on acquiring the data from device. Logical and physical acquisitions from the handset as well as the removable storage are discussed. The issue of passcode circumvention is discussed along with potential solutions. Chapter 7 finishes with timeline analysis techniques for the YAFFS file system and the FAT file system. Additional locations of interest to both security researchers and forensic analysts are also presented. Overall the book is enjoyable to read and will be a valuable asset for both forensic analysts and researchers.

Kindle version is device dependent for readability

One reviewer commented that code samples are unreadable for the Kindle version. That seems to be true for standard, small screen, non-color devices (i.e. classic Kindles). However, on my iPad Kindle app the code samples are fine. In fact you can unpinch them to zoom in, and rotate your device to portrait mode if needed. Also, the online Kindle Cloud Reader shows the code samples clearly. Hopefully future conversions of technical texts such as this one will be done with more care to allow resizing of special text. For now you will need your PC with the free Cloud Reader, or some large screen tablet device to take advantage of this ebook.

CHAPTER BOOKS FOR TRULY BEGINNING READERS! YEST ITS TRUE!!
I am an educator and a mother of a 2nd grader who is a struggeling reader. She wanted desperately to read "chapter books" like her peers; but they were above her reading level and causing a great deal of frustration. This series has been a god-send! My little one is reading the chapter books she so wanted to read, but the best part is that she is understanding them!!! The language is positioned beautifully for emmerging readers. My little one is so proud of herself! She feels like a big girl! She loves the books! But what is most impotant is that she is comprehending what she is reading. A+ from this mommy/teacher!!

I tutor a 3rd grader in reading and she and I read this book in 2 days! She loves these books and I'm working on getting all of them for her for summer reading.

As with the other books in this series this was an easy read. It can be challenging depending on the reading level but it is easy as in once you get started you want to see what happens. There a pictures on every page which keeps the interest of young readers. The characters are funny and lovable. I'm looking forward to starting the next one!

Rapper, performance artist, and poet Tempest has taken the main plot lines contained in her critically acclaimed hip-hop album Everybody Down and expanded them into this spectacularly moving debut novel. The work centers on two pairs of 20-somethings in modern London—a drug dealer named Harry and her best friend and "tough" Leon; and an erotic masseuse and dancer named Becky and her overprotective boyfriend Pete. As Tempest follows these four young people trying to find their place in the gritty underbelly of London and introduces readers to their friends and families, it becomes apparent that they are connected in seemingly preposterously coincidental ways. But Tempest justifies these coincidences. She has an ostensibly compulsive need to toss off new stories and characters: nearly every time readers meet characters, Tempest discusses their tangential backstories and family histories. Each tangent works as a perfect miniature short story, giving weight to the way it later connects back to the main plot. About the Author
Kate Tempest grew up in southeast London, where she still lives. She has gained acclaim as a poet, playwright, rapper, and recording artist. Her long poem Brand New Ancients, conceived as a performance piece, won the Ted Hughes Award for Poetry in 2012. In 2014, her album Everybody Down was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and she was selected as one of this decade’s Next Generation Poets by the Poetry Book Society. She is also the author of the collection Hold Your Own. This is her first novel.

Novelization of "Everybody Down"

I first discovered Kate Tempest as a musician rather than an author. Her fantastic rap album Everybody Down tells the exact same story as this novel, down to the same characters and plotlines (with a few minor changes--Harry is a man in the album's story, for example, though that doesn't matter much in the scheme of things).

Since I have a lot of familiarity with Everybody Down, I'd like to point out that The Bricks that Build the Houses does a great job of fleshing out the characters we meet in Kate Tempest's music. In her novel, Tempest gives us a lot of details on background characters and the influence they've had on the protagonists, with special emphasis placed on families and their history. Tempest can get a bit long-winded at times with details about these characters, but in all it helps to give substance to the world she's created among her interesting cast of disenfranchised London youth.

If you like this novel, I highly recommend checking out Everybody Down as a companion. I'm not usually a fan of rap, but it is truly one of my favorite albums in recent memory. If you found this novel due to your interest in Kate Tempest's music, I can say with confidence that The Bricks that Built the Houses does a great job of fleshing out the album's characters and is a worthy read in and of itself.

Great writing, characters and observations. Terrible ending.

I love Kate Tempest's poetry, especially live, having heard her on the now defunct Book Slam podcast. This is a book full of her unique, clever and often funny observations, especially the London I Knew in the 1980s and '90s.
However, the ending is akin to the final scene of The Sopranos. I almost always keep all my books. I left this behind on vacation for another reader to be left frustrated. Poor editorial choice is my guess.
