KEITH HJORTSHOJ (Cornell University) is the Director of Writing in the Majors in the Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines at Cornell University. He is also a senior lecturer in the Writing Workshop, which offers courses and services for students who encounter difficulty with writing and reading, especially in the first year of college. He has worked extensively with faculty development and teacher training across the curriculum. Currently, Hjortshoj is developing courses, workshops, and a book on writing for graduate students.

Overprices

This is an excellect book--and later I'll write a fuller review--but for Bedford/St. Martins to charge 36 bucks for this slender volume is outrageous. I had wanted to recommend it as the summer book for all our incoming froshers, but not at this price. Too bad. Keith Hjortshoj, you've written a great book. Unfortunatly, not enough people will read it.

The book came in great condition, brand new! I have finished reading it for class and it's not that bad. It actually tries to relate to occurences that I will understand easily and connect to in my expiereinces with writting, reading and even note taking and studying.

Perfect for the College Writing Tutor

I bought this book as a requirement for a Writing class that trained me to become a writing tutor at my college. I found the book was full of great points about how writing is different in college versus high school, and it addresses the many misconceptions about writing. It also touches on many of the elements that professors are looking for in freshman writing and beyond. I think it is a great tool for tutors to use and understand when tutoring freshman. I do think this book can be very overwhelming for a freshman to pick up and read without guidance from a mentor or tutor though. if you are a new freshman and looking to get this book, try not to be overwhelmed, and seek the writing center at your college for writing tutors who can give you advice and help you with your first few papers, in addition to simply reading this book.

For Zak Ebrahim, a childhood amongst terrorism was all he knew. After his father’s incarceration, his family moved often, and as the perpetual new kid in class, he faced constant teasing and exclusion. Yet, though his radicalized father and uncles modeled fanatical beliefs, to Ebrahim something never felt right. To the shy, awkward boy, something about the hateful feelings just felt unnatural.

In this book, Ebrahim dispels the myth that terrorism is a foregone conclusion for people trained to hate. Based on his own remarkable journey, he shows that hate is always a choice—but so is tolerance. Though Ebrahim was subjected to a violent, intolerant ideology throughout his childhood, he did not become radicalized. Ebrahim argues that people conditioned to be terrorists are actually well positioned to combat terrorism, because of their ability to bring seemingly incompatible ideologies together in conversation and advocate in the fight for peace. Ebrahim argues that everyone, regardless of their upbringing or circumstances, can learn to tap into their inherent empathy and embrace tolerance over hatred. His original, urgent message is fresh, groundbreaking, and essential to the current discussion about terrorism.

I am now reading my third book. The first was outstanding, the second was also very good. Now, I am reading 'The Laws of Medicine'. As a Physician, I am truly enjoying it so far. The concept of Teds Books is superb, and I am loving it! I am sharing with my Physician husband who gave me this 'gift' for Christmas.
I must admit that the first book, 'The Terrorist's Son', just blew me out of the water! It was a mind changer for me, as an American. It is a 'must read'!

About the Author
Dr. Bert Carron is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology, and the Canadian Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology Association. He is a Past President of the Canadian Association for Sport Sciences and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Sports Medicine Council of Canada. In 1998, Bert was a co-recipient of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education's Sport Science Award of the International Olympic Committee President. Currently, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, the International Journal of Sport Psychology, and Small Group Research. Bert's research focuses on group dynamics in sport teams and exercise groups.

Dr. Mark Eys is an Assistant Professor of sport and exercise psychology in the School of Human Kinetics at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. Mark's research interests include role ambiguity and acceptance in sport and exercise groups, the measurement and correlates of cohesion, and social influences in exercise. He has published his research in the Journal of Sports Sciences, International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, and Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. In 2001, he was awarded the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Coach of the Year for his work with The University of Western Ontario women's soccer program.
