Explore The Mind of Reason

Mark Twain expressed it best when he wrote the following lines to his wife in 1879:

"I've just come to my room, Livy darling, I guess this was the memorable night of my life. By George, I never was so stirred since I was born. I heard [a speech] by that splendid old soul, Col. Bob Ingersoll,--oh, it was just the supremest combination of English words that was ever put together since the world began."

Mark Twain embodied the hearts and minds of many American's with these words, for indeed, Robert Ingersoll was very well known and was a mangificent orator and politician. People travelled for miles to hear his speeches, where attendance was standing room only. Quite often, Col. Ingersoll's speeches ran for three hours or more (which he committed to memory and recited without use of notes), yet people would stay for the entire presentation, totally enthralled and hanging on his words. The time was the late 1800's and it was the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Freethought in America.

Now, it isn't surprising, really, why the name Robert Ingersoll has slipped quietly into the history books with most people today having never heard of his name. Robert Ingersoll was an agnostic and quite often spoke on the subjects of religion and God. His views were considered offensive and heretic by many, but to many others his words rang with clear reason and logic and commanded the attention of all who heard his words. Quite often, the press would ridicule him and paint him in an unfavorable light, often citing the religious ire and condemnation of those who could not answer the questions he presented, but wished his voice to be silenced nonetheless. But Robert Ingersoll was also a rationalist, a free thinker, and he advocated and preached the doctrine of reason, logic and science. He implored that all men should think for themselves and not fall victim to the mindless banter of tradition or religious dogma. Clearly, he was offensive to some, but to many he was the voice of reason and clear thought.

Ingersoll was a visionary and was ahead of his time on many subjects. He was an abolitionist who was opposed to all forms of human slavery and who was a very ardent supporter of women's rights and the right for women to vote. And although he held no belief in the supernatural or in God, he was very moral and upstanding and would serve as a fine example today to the politicians who make a mockery of our Constitution and our civil liberties. Ingersoll was a republican and the Attorney General of Illinois and his popularity was so high and his name so well known, he was repeatedly asked to run for Governor of Illinois. Unfortunately, there was one problem. Even though the Constitution states that no man shall be required to profess a belief in any religion to be eligible to hold positions within the government, the church and the influence of religious dogma in this country had grown to a point that any man who would dare say that he was agnostic or atheist would never receive the support of any political party to run for high office. He was asked to publicly recant his beliefs so that he could run for office, to which he adamantly refused by stating:

"Good-by, gentlemen! I am not asking to be Governor of Illinois ... I have in my composition that which I have declared to the world as my views upon religion. My position I would not, under any circumstances, not even for my life, seem to renounce. I would rather refuse to be President of the United States than to do so. My religious belief is my own. It belongs to me, not to the State of Illinois. I would not smother one sentiment of my heart to be the Emperor of the round world."

Many of Ingersoll's views and opinions will be seen as harsh by those who hold dear to a religious faith. But that is not reason enough to silence the words and thoughts of this man. He presents many interesting arguments and reasons worthy of discussion and ponderation. It is sad that just because a man who holds a view outside the norm of the mainstream that he should be forgotten and silenced as an infidel or a heretic. Sadly, even to this very day, any man who openly professes to have no religion or no belief in God is still ostracized and cannot hope to serve in any high political office in the land of the free. Ingersoll quite often pointed out that unless a man uses his mind to think for himself, he will always be a slave to those who tell him what to think and what to believe.

This book provides an interesting insight to our history about a man and an era in history that was born not out of superstition, but out of reason and logic and the desire to think. Certainly, this book will not be for everyone, but whether you agree with Ingersoll's opinions or not is irrelevant. The fact remains that this is a page out of our American history books that should be dusted off and looked at again. Ingersoll made some amazing predictions that came true and still offers today some thoughts and ideals that are worthy of discussion that are relevant to our current world and society. This book is but merely a collection of speeches from Ingersoll and will serve as a good introduction to the body of his work.

America - Please give us another Ingersoll

If American children were required to read Robert Ingersoll, the world would be a safer place to be. His warmth and commonsense shine through everything he has ever written. His speeches are clear and insightful, and particularly relevant with much of America caught in the climate of fear stemming from the religious fervour that has engulfed them.

His writings show that a moral life has no connection with a religious belief. I confess I would give any book relating to Ingersoll's writings 5 stars as I have never found a speech of his that wasn't witty, good natured and exhibited great intelligence. His technique of always attacking the belief not the believer demonstrates his generous spirit.

Both fascinating and enlightening, this book should be read by everyone as food for thought, if nothing else. It's a shame Robert Ingersoll's words of wisdom aren't more widely known. I'm glad we at least have this collection.

An excellent book of exercises

I have used this book with my students with great success. The explanations of how to form and use different grammatical constructions in English are clear and precise. The images help beginners learn vocabulary and grammar at the same time. In particular, many foreign learners have difficulty with the structure of questions in English. This book provides good explanations and lots of practice. The book is intended to be for self-study, but I think it is too much for beginners to do alone. As a companion to regular classes, I can recommend it unreservedly.

About the Author

Bryan Costales lives and writes in San Francisco, California. He has been active in system administration and software development for more than 20 years and has been writing articles and books about computer software for more than 25 years. His most notable books are "C from A to Z" (Prentice Hall), "Unix Communications" (Howard Sams), and "sendmail" (O'Reilly). In addition to technical books, he also writes fiction and hosts a free multimedia web site.

Claus Assmann is a member of the Sendmail Consortium and works for Sendmail, Inc. He is the maintainer of sendmail 8 and currently implements a new MTA (message transfer agent) named MeTA1. His main interests in computer technology are security and performance. He studied computer science at the University of Kiel in Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in 1992.

George Jansen is a freelance writer who has worked with Bryan Costales on several of Bryan's books. His first novel, The Jesse James Scrapbook, is published by Hilliard & Harris. His second, The Fade-away, is published by Pocol Press. He lives in the Bay Area, drives a brand new Toyota Yaris, and enjoys baseball, classic jazz, and taking long naps.

Gregory Shapiro began his professional career as a systems administrator for Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) after graduating from the university in 1992. During his tenure as Senior Unix Systems Administrator, he became involved with beta testing the BIND name server, the sendmail mail transfer agent, and other Unix utilities such as emacs and screen. His involvement with sendmail grew until he became Principal Engineer at Sendmail, Inc., where he continued to support the open source version while working on Sendmail's commercial products. He later moved into the IT team as the Senior Unix Network Systems Administrator. He is now Director, Strategic Technology at Sendmail, Inc. He is also a FreeBSD committer and has served as program committee member for BSDCon 2002 and program chair for BSDCon 2003. Greg lives in California and enjoys reading science fiction and fantasy books, traveling, and seeing movies and theater productions.

The book is heavy. If you swatted a bat with it - we'll you'd get what is on the front cover. This is all good - this book has everything you ever wanted or needed to know about sendmail.

wombat book must have

The 'wombat' book. If you are a *NIX Admin and you have a lot of email to process or you have sendmail you *MUST* have this book. Everybody today is using "postfix" because it's easy, but it has issues and it IS NOT the definitive MTA. Sendmail is. If you are a *NIX admin and you have a lot of mail to handle Sendmail will do it all. Have been using Sendmail for 15+ years and nothing else is faster or more robust. This book covers everything about it from how it processes and stores mail to how to wright Left-Hand-Side (LHS) and Right-Hand_side (RHS) rules for mail flow, spam control, and external processing. I work at a company that handles tens of millions of emails messages daily and we use sendmail for everything and we have uptimes in terms of years, not months. We tried postfix and wound up replacing it with sendmail, if accepting email for our nationwide employee email base.

About the Author
Jonathan V. Marshall is an independent scholar living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has published four books, including Cocaine Politics (1991), with Peter Dale Scott, and Drug Wars (1991). A former journalist, he has also published hundreds of articles in magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.

The Lebanese Connection

Jonathan Marshall's The Lebanese Connection is that rare book that combines the thrill of drug deals with a behind the scenes look at the failed politics that allowed those deals to go down. As someone not well-schooled in the recent history of Lebanon, I was particularly interested in the factors that allowed one of the Middle East's most successful nations, that once boasted a healthy economy and tourist trade, to gradually descend into a major drug trafficking hub. Marshall builds a convincing case on how a corrupt government opened the doors to the narcotics industry in Lebanon, leading to a political system, economy, and psyche that has yet to recover. Even more significant, The Lebanese Connection holds lessons for the current drug trade-induced carnage in Mexico, and is must reading for those following the plight of that rapidly disintegrating society.

Grade 7 Up-- A collection of original chillers. Several of the contributors are well known in the genre (Yolen, William Sleator, Bruce Coville, Diana Wynne Jones, and Anne E. Crompton), and others less so. The settings are mostly contemporary, urban America, but China, Canada, Britain, and the Philippines are also represented. Most represent a fairly straightforward prose narrative style, but there are two with a folklorish tone, and even a movie script. All are suitably creepy, although not lacking in humor. The gender balance of protagonists is a little better than usual, with nine stories featuring a male main character, five female, and four shared or not indicated (and irrelevant). Inanimate objects, some of them disturbingly active, feature prominently, as the title suggests. The pieces vary in length from a three-page quickie to a novella. There is a short introduction that may or may not be read, as it's a somewhat self-conscious apologia for this type of fantasy. There are some welcome notes on the contributors. The only real fault is the predictable one for this type of anthology: the quality of the selections is uneven, with some stories first-rate and others only so-so. Yolen's The Babysitter and Sleator's The Elevator are real heart-pound ers, but Jones' Chair Person is a one-joke piece that goes on far too long. The Scarlet Batling rates top marks for authenticity, but only a passing grade for child appeal. On the other hand Duffy's Jacket would be a perfect Friday afternoon classroom read-aloud or booktalk centerpiece. When I searched for this book, and found out that it was a penny, I thought to myself that maybe I should have looked for it alot earlier. I love this book! It was in awesome condition AND it has this old library smell that gets me giddy. I've read it 3 times so far, and I am sooo not done yet! Thanks for the book!!!
